    I welcome this move,all staff working in the child care sector should be professionally trained.The only thing is it could drive up costs.

    Lenihan announces new childcare regulations

    The Minister for Children, Brian Lenihan has announced the introduction of new regulations for childcare facilities but has cautioned against a requirement for staff to be professionally trained.

    The move follows revelations that three hundred official complaints against creches were lodged to the HSE in the past two years.

    Some involved the repeated slapping of children, or toddlers being left alone in public places.

    In one case, a person was sacked after tying a child's hands behind its back with sticky tape.

    But the Minister has warned that requiring creche staff to be trained professionally could drive up costs and said he is opposed to creating a closed shop or monopoly in the area of child-care.

    Smoke and mirrors. There is not much wrong with the existing regulations. These creches were in breach of the regulations. How is new regs going to make a difference to that?

    I'd also caution against a reguirement to have professional training compulsory. Some childcare staff have no training, but have great empathy and rapport with children, others could have a degree in early years and not know how to connect with a child.

    I think one of the main changes is that all creche reports/inspections will be made public.

    The reports are already available, you just apply to your local HSE and request the report under the Freedom of Information. There may be a fee for this. For all inspections carried out from January 1st 2006 you ask the childcare provider for a copy and if you don't receive it then you can request it from HSE.

    The biggest change that could be made to make quality better would be to make garda clearance compulsory for all childcare workers, and afaik this is not in the new regulations :(
