Can anyone tell me the difference between a group A rally car and a group N rally car?

Group N is a "blueprinted" car. Thats to say that the modifications are fairly limited and must be withing manufacturers tolerances.

Group A much more is allowed.

Some of the guys on the motorsport forum will have more detailed info:

    yup....
Group N are standard showroom class as they are called, as you can buy a similar car in your local garage, the amount of modifications you can make to them is limited.
Group A (or WRC now) , or works cars as they are called, are built specifically for rallying by teams and under the bonnet the are radically different.
