Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Fedora core 5 - fresh install, can't boot

I've just installed Fedora Core 5 (standard i386 version) on my laptop. The install appeared to go smoothly, but when I boot the machine it hangs on "Starting udev:". Just sits there with a flashing cursor forever.
I can still boot into my Windows XP installation on the same disk without problems.

    Laptop specs:

    Intel Centrino 1.73ghz
    1gb DDR2-533 ram
    nvigia 6600go gpu
    100gig ide disk

If anyone has any ideas how to get it to boot, I'd appreciate the input.

    Ta.

Found a workaround - disabling ACPI lets it boot. Bit crap for a laptop though.

ACPI problems are usually because of an improperly compiled kernel, not technically wrong, but may just be a setting wrong. Each time you get an updated kernel, reenable ACPI and try it again. Or read somewhere like www.fedoraforum.org and see if someone has found a fix and recompile the kernel based on their advice. :)

Have you tried setting 'noapic' rather than 'noacpi' when you boot up?
This might let you boot, but you'd still have power management.

I don't have any problem booting Fedora Core 5 on my AMD64 laptop, true i'm booting the x86_64 version of FC5 but still. Perhaps you need a bios update.

My laptop is a regular 32 bit Intel Pentium-M affair, with latest bios. Judging by fedora forums, tons of people with centrino chipsets are having the same problem.

I've buggered off and put ubuntu back on the laptop instead.

    (three cheers for partimage!)

    Thanks for the suggestions though.
