Is there a minimal warranty under EU law?

Someone has an 18th month old printer. They got a 12 month warranty and the thing has just packed in. They now said that they believe that, under some EU law or directive, there is a minimal warranty and the 12 months was not long enough.

Anyone got any information or is this pie in the sky?
