    Hi all,

    Does anyone know a way to identify, from looking at the engine if a 1.9 Tdi (2003) is 110bhp or 130bhp ?

    Thanks

    They dont make 110bhp in the 2003 model.Its 100 or 130 in 2003 for this shape from late 2001 to Late 2005.

    Drive it and you can tell straight away!

    I had a similar question recently with my 1.8T, on the first page of the audi manual there should be a KW rating. You can workout the bhp from that KW figure.

    Under carpet in the boot is the same sticker you will see number followed by
    Kw multiply this number by 1.33 approx and theres your bhp

    There was no 110bhp available in the new shape A4 from 2001 onwards.

    In 2001 I think there was a 115bhp non PD unit alright for a short time but this was discontinued by the end of 2001. There were 100bhp and 130bhp PD versions also. The 100bhp had a TDi badge on the boot & on the engine cover with no red letters. The 130bhp had a TDi badge with the "i" in red.

    Identical sticker is also on the inside cover of the "Service Schedule" handbook.

    Speaking to a guy in here who has a Passat, he said it can be identified also from the VIN, possibly in the PR code section described below for Audi's.

    Your VIN (vehicle identification number) contains useful information regarding your Audi. In some instances you may need to know the model year or the chassis number (serial number) as Audi makes many changes in the middle of model years. You may also need to know whether your car was produced in Germany, Hungary, Switzerland, or Czechoslovakia.

    Here is a sample VIN number: WAULT68E74A207781

    The first character represents the country of manufacture
    W = Germany
    T = Hungary, Switzerland or Czechoslovakia

    The seventh and eight characters represent the model, generally this is not needed but it is required in some cases.

    The tenth character represents the model year
    A = 1980
    B = 1981
    C = 1982
    D = 1983
    E = 1984
    F = 1985
    G = 1986
    H = 1987
    J = 1988
    K = 1989
    L = 1990
    M = 1991
    N = 1992
    P = 1993
    R = 1994
    S = 1995
    T = 1996
    V = 1997
    W = 1998
    X = 1999
    Y = 2000
    1 = 2001
    2 = 2002
    3 = 2003
    4 = 2004
    5 = 2005

    The 12th thru 17th characters are the chassis number. This is the car's serial number, issued sequentially as each car is produced. So, our car with the sample VIN WAULT68E74A207781 was the 207,781st car built in 2004 in Germany.

    Why should you care about all this? Because it is very valuable in determining whether your car was produced before or after a mid-year change. Our goal is to get you the correct parts for your car. For example, in our catalog we may refer to a part as fitting "A4, fwd, 2.8L V6 12V, '96-mid '98(thru chassis # W_160955)"

    This means it fits A4, front wheel drive, with 2.8 liter V6 12 valve engine, 1996, 1997, and also the first 160955 cars produced in model year 1998. The "W" indicates model year 1998, the "_" indicates the next character which does not matter, and the "160955" is the serial number.

    PR Codes

    With many later model Audis it is also important to know PR codes (also called option codes) for your car to select many parts such as brakes or wheel bearings as Audi may install different parts on the same model and there is no way to tell which parts were used by the year and model alone.

    Fortunately this is easy to determine with the vehicle's PR code. PR codes are 3 character alphanumeric codes that describe various options the car has. The PR codes, along with the engine code, transmisson code, etc, may be found on the vehicle's build sticker.

    A copy of this sticker should be attached to the first pages the car's warranty booklet. There should also be a sticker attached to the body of the car, usually in the trunk under the carpet or in the spare tire area.

    It is the KW which identifies it for you I think the 130 is 96kw and the 100 is 73kw, I have the 130 but not any docs with me but I can check the 130.

    As the 100bhp has a 5 speed manual gearbox whereas the 130bhp has a 6 speed gearbox plus there is a big difference in acceleration on the 130bhp.

    Obviously the tiptronic version might not be as clear cut.

    Thanks everyone for your great replies.

    This is a 03 A6 avant SE. It has 5 gears as opposed to 6.
    5 gears, as per previous post...does this definately mean that the car is only 110/110 ?

    I drive a Civic VTi myself with 167bhp (which is for sale) where the power comes in after 5,500 so its hard for me to identify if this is 130 or 110/100bhp :(

    The pulling power is impressive, but not the answer.

    Thanks, James.

    We have a 5 gear manual A4, its 130Bhp. I asked the guy in the garage and he said the Red I on the back is not a reliable indicator of the bhp.

    Edit: Its also 03

    No the 130s don't all have 6 speed.
