    Having the worst morning EVER.

After my lecture this morning went to the LG's to print off my essay that has to be handed in today. Due to my disk key being MIA I had it saved to a floppy disk and the metal cover bit had fallen off it, so the computer cant read it. so therefore, no essay.

Luckily a friend of mine was randomly sitting at the computer beside me and she kinda calmed me down slightly. So I went up to my lecturer (Hugh Gough is a SAINT!) who also told me to calm down and said I could hand it in tomorrow. I love him!

But no I have to try rewrite the whole thing... ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never ever use a floppy to save important course work on to. They are the least reliable form of backup. And the disk drives in UCD are full of dirt and fluff. So they ruin a brand new floppy in seconds.

You could email it to yourself... you have 1GB of space on a Yahoo account and almost 3GB on a Gmail account. Great for backups.

Plus there is a firefox plugin that lets you use your gmail account as a fileserver.

Keep it simple! You're presuming Beany has a) a gmail account b) her own laptop and c) knows what firefox is!

Nope, but you can insall it on your account or on a usb key and it will work.

What's firefox and why does everyone else have it?! :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

    http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

FF is a internet browser like Internet Explorer. But it is much better:
    a) It's free
    b) more secure
    c) Customizable. You change how it looks, different themes etc.
    d) Has features liked tabbed browsing, downloadmanager etc
    e) Best bit is extensions. These are plug ins or add ons that allow you to expand the usability of firefox. There is a plug in to do just about anything you want. There' is even one that allows u to use mouse movement to move back and forward etc.

I'm a Microsoft fan but even I switched to FF.

You sold your soul to the devil for a few freebies?

[edit] You really don't deserve the nerds award for that comment :p

Not entirely. Won a copy of Office 2003 pro there recently when they came in for a grad recruitment thing in CSI. Worth a few hundred euro so rather nice of them.
But to redeem myself I do use FF and TB instead of IE and OE.

Yay, it sounds cool, I want to try it.

Here's a silly question...if I download it can I keep internet explorer just incase I don't like it or I'm too blonde for it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

Yep. Indeed you need to use Internet Explorer to use the Microsoft Update site and some banking sites.

My fav theme is this one btw.

Re: using Gmail to hold files,

I just attach the file to an empty email and save it as a draft. Works like a charm :) But I have a USB keyring too, so if it's REALLY important, then I save it on both :D And maybe my H Drive in college :D

wow... this really has sparked off a nerdfest!! hehe.

I have a gmail account, but no laptop this has made me really want to get one though!! damn my lack of funds.

Dell are doing one for 399 at the moment, it's a pretty good deal for what you get, and about as cheap as you are going to find.
