    Hi,

Is it really neccessary to partake in the NCT. Its possible to do the car-tax online, and they dont ask for any NCT details? Has anyone heard of something bad happening to someone who didnt do the NCT? ( Apart from the car breaking down)

    Thanks!
    Stephen

I would presume that you are giving your insurance company a really good reason for not paying out in the event of an accident.

I would also expect that, even though you have paid for it, your car would technically not be taxed as having a valid NCT is a requirement for the car to be taxed.

having a current NCT is mandatory. however, the gardai currently don't seem to enforce it (you may be unlucky and get a newbie straight outta training who wants to build up a profile).
Your insurance company may look unfavourably on the issue also.

incidentally that issue of a car breaking down would not be related proportionally to the presence or lack of an NCT cert

It is a legal requirement to have an NCT every 2 years on cars 4 years old or more. There is a fine for not having a valid certificate. However, this isn't enforced to the extent it should be.
IMO you should have it done in the interest of safety - both your's and other road users.
