I was wondering how the www.boards.ie index page is done? I have to make a forum for a college project and having would love to do something like boards have for a main welcome page. The forum I'm trying is based around school's sports and announcements (not really important) but I'd love to be able to have a "most recent posts" section seperate to the forum itself. I'm currently using SimpleMachinesForum but wouldn't mind paying the few quid for a vbulletin licence if it's a feature of vB (which it doesn't seem to be)

On a second note, is the navigation menu at the top standard with vB. If not is it an easily installable plugin or does it require tricky javascript coding?

The menu at the top isn't a standard part of VB, although there are Javascript menu solutions availabe on the web. Someone mentioned the name of the menus solution used here before, can't remember what it was though.

For the recent posts, I think that's a custom hack by the admins as well, though you could try vbAdvanced

The DHTML menu is molonic, and I do believe that the front page is custom done by Cloud.
There are good solutions out there as Stark said.
vBadvanced is the most famous and widely used.

    I use it myself, aswell.

I registered on that vbadvanced.com and it just registered me to the forum  I thought I was registering for my own forum! :p

How do I do that (for free, as failsafe said :D)?

Do a search under 'Last10.php' and 'last10.config.php' on vB.org and you will find info on linking threads to the main page, works really well too. :)
