    Hey. Big Problem.

Im in the library and im dying for a smoke. The problem is my table is covered in work and a laptop. Seeing as I havnt slept in about 48 hours (combination of night shifts, TV, internet and college) im way to lazy to go about putting it all away to go for a smoke. Anyone have any ideas how to go for a smoke and leave a laptop at the same time?

Also if anyone sees or hears me asleep in the library face down on the Zzzzzzzzzz button please poke me.

Eh, just shove the laptop into your bag, that's what I always do, i know it doesnt' let you leave it in but yeah, Other thing to do is lock it so theres less chance of people stealing it, that's all i got on the ideas front though.

If you have one of those flexible bike locks-then put that round your laptop and the table and it should be ok.Or just leave it in your bag-that what I do.

Or DONT SMOKE-two problems solved in one-you no longer have black lungs and your laptop is safe-voila!

should be ok if ur only gone for 5 mins. Or as Steph said stick it in ur bag so not obvious that it's there.

Panda, have you tried ur bike lock theory? Surely you could just slip the laptop out from under the lock???

Thanks people. Went for over half an hour. 1 smoke turned into 8 smokes , a cup of coffee and an in depth conversation about the pros and cons of systems of government around the world with Seb.

Computer Remains Untouched. Its still on the porn site I left it on.

It does sound unusual, maybe buying one of those security locks would be a good idea, anyone know are they any good? I always take my dudley out of the library - stops me worrying.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

well if it's a proper laptop lock that connects to the laptop anchor point on laptop then they're great to stop people just lifting your laptop.

They can be cut with a pair of bolt cutters, but this would be fairly obvious to see and unlikely to happen in any computer lab in UCD.

Not exactly the cheap option, but if a laptop is worth enough...

before my laptop met with an unfortunate end at the hands of my ass (yeah, don't ask) i used to ask some random fellow laptop user to keep an eye on it for me while i went off.

Ok the fact that you mentioned how it met its end just begs to be asked "What? How? When?" So spill the beans.

basically i sat on it. how that happened is complicated and would involve an explanation of chair politics in my parents' house, but the end result is that i sat on it. luckily their house insurance covers extreme stupidity on the part of adult offspring, but i haven't got around to getting a new one yet.

I presume the whole laptop wasn't wrecked, just the screen, which can sometimes be easily fixed/replaced. You could prob salvage some parts from it (RAM, Harddrive, etc) if not. Could take the HD out and attach to another PC to get any files off it that you need. Then again you might have done this already.

yeah, it was just the screen that was broken, but because it was a few years old and the battery was dead as well, the insurance company said it'd make more sense to get a new one. screens are expensive as all hell to fix. they sent me back the hard drive and scrapped the rest of it. i'm not sure what to do with the hard drive now - i'll have to find someone who can do nerdy things with computers to copy stuff off it for me. or maybe i could get some sort of yokey that would connect it to my next laptop and use it as external storage?

    /nerd_talk_resumes
Cheeky bastards only sending you back the HD. I'd have asked for it all back.

Anyway, yea not a prob hooking the HD up to a desktop and copying the info off it. Small adapter is needed that's all.

As for use as external drive you can buy an enclosure for it like this one and hook it up to any PC.
PM me if you need any help

This is the first time I've found myself interested in politics on boards, Chair politics, interesting...
I can only assume panda was joking but I'd love to see that, a computer with a bike lock around it:)

    oooh yeay laptop talk!!

My laptop broke two week ago with all my stuff on....somebody should tell me how to get all the stuff off the hard drive. *looks at irlrobins*

My new laptop picks up wireless everywhere though!! Yay!!

By the way, I still have the wireless card from the old one, it's only about a month old and cost me seventy-five euro, if anyone wants it for like twenty since it's of no use to me, shout!

Also...I need some urgent advice. I'm in the library, I have this really annoying feeling that I left my car unlocked, its parked sooooo far away, and it could be locked, I always get feelings, do I need to go check? What are the chances something will even happen if it is unlocked?

You guys think you're being lazy? I went clothes shopping this morning...

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

For peace of mind, go check. Nothing will prob happen. But would you be able to live with yourself if it's stolen and you thought u hadn't locked it!

As for wireless card, sell it on the Shop->Computer Hardware forum. And ask for more than 20e!!!

yea but at least you've achieved something! I have nothing to show for my day so far.

Well given that I have a crapload of stuff that I *should* be doing, letting the Dundrum centre act as a procrastination tool probably isn't the greatest idea...

...and if I want to get this stuff done I really should hide my games consoles away too!

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

feel free to store said consoles in my study room.

Hehehe.....I spotted my friend a few desks away, gave him my keys and convinced him to go check for me........mwahahaha

Wireless card- it's still actually worth something then? I'm pants with technology.

Well if it's a decent brand then it could be worth more than 20. Anyway the thing with the FS section is to quote high and then accept the highest offer. If you start at 20 then you'll only get 20.

Linksys wireless g? It cost seventy five a month ago so i should probably get more than 20 being even slightly realistic!
