    ...have a pretty clapped out 1996 Audi A4. Thinking of updating, wouldn't mind getting something 3 or 4 years old around the €20k mark. Any recommendations - was told that the second hand A6 is as cheap as the A4 - and any good websites?

    Try http://www.carzone.ie or http://www.cbg.ie for ball park figures.

    You will be hard pushed finding a 3 or 4 year old one on there for €20k though.

    The best place to get these cars is in the UK or NI. They are cheaper there, the specifications are higher and they generally look after their cars better than we do.

    A few people on here have already gone down this route recently.

    Conor74, where are you located?

    You can get UK import, low milage a4/a6 saloons for 21/22k if you look.

    try autotrader.ie and search all 32 counties.

    Guy in work here has been looking for a 2-3 yr old Audi A4 last few weeks...plenty sites around.

    Best to start with carzone & cbg

    From there you get an idea of which dealers sell Audi's specifically and keep an eye on their sites.

    I know someone selling a '01 A4 1.9TDi with 57k for about €19k

    I'd say you'd be looking about the 20K mark for a 2002 Audi A4 Tdi. I should know, I bought one last year. Can't recommend the car enough Tbh. Try and get a 130bph if you can. I'd also look into importing one if it's an option for you.

    Same as that, import is your best bet. Took one in at the weekend and I could not find an Audi anywhere to match the spec never mind the price.
    A bit of leg work but worth it.

    Thanks for all the info folks.

    Never crossed my mind to go to NI, but if I did what sort of tax is one looking at - when you say they're better is that taking all the costs into consideration?

    Find a car in northern 6 counties and see how much the VRT (import fleecing) will cost you by going here;
    https://www.ros.ie/VRTEnquiryServlet/ShowVRT

    UK audi specs are typcially far high than in Ireland because extras are top-heavy due to VRT on them. UK audi have a far higher range of colours, interiors and trims than ireland too.. how lovely.....
