Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

All of a sudden I've spotted that CHKDSK keeps verifying the Usn Journal on my C drive. I've never seen this before in my whole 5 years of working on PCs. What is it? Anything I should be concerned about?

Er, schedule another run with /f [/r] to (try) fix it.

    What OS (ver.)?

I've actually already done that, still comes up even after a /f.

    It's XP Pro SP2.

    Can you confirm:
    RAID? Number or HDD's/Partitions? NTFS?
That you scheduled i.e. ran the chkdsk /r /f on bootup and not from within Windows? Do you have Norton IS?

No RAID. One HD, two partitions (both NTFS). Only the C drive does the Usn journal check, the D drive is fine.

I ran CHKDSK from the recovery console because Windows wouldn't start at one stage. Its still doing the Usn Journal check after that.

    No Norton products at all.

I only noticed this happen after I put my hard disk into a Mac to transfer data... maybe the Mac screwed up my disk? It had OS X 10.4.1

    Possibly.
It relates to a log of all changes made to a volume. [Uupdate Sequence Number (USN) ]
The USN change journal used by the Indexing Service, File Replication Service (FRS), Remote Installation Service (RIS), and Remote Storage.

    Where to go from here?
Try turning off Indexing Service on C: (My Computer->C: Properties -> Untickety)
After you do this: Reboot. Does it still check?

It did still check. But I managed to solve the problem myself.

I found a command on the Microsoft KB to delete the journal:

    fsutil usn deletejournal /d c:

Since I did this it hasn't checked.

I was going to suggest that as a last restort.

    G'luck:)

It's back... verifying the USN Journal again. But now I see why...

Windows Live Messenger 8.0 installs a service that uses the USN journal for the Sharing Folders feature. This seems to be what's causing it. Maybe I should just ignore it from now on, its not causing any harm.
