Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Buying a Win2k License

    I'm looking for a license for Windows 2000 Professional - don't mind if it's second-hand or what as long as it's the physical product key certificate thing.

    How do the upgrade licenses work? If you can only use them by upgrading from an older OS (Windows ME in this case), i.e. not doing a complete re-format (and it asking you for the previous OS license or something), I won't bother with it.

    I remember seeing some website (possibly Irish) that had lots of old Windows licenses (just the licenses, not CDs or anything) for sale, and I think I found the link on boards.ie somewhere, though I can't remember now - am I imagining things?

    Generally the upgrades were retail boxed. Although some big name makers provided COA's with both NT 4.0 and 2k licneces on them.
    don't mind if it's second-hand or what as long as it's the physical product key certificate thing.

    The only way to fully legitimately do it is to grab a retail box or unmlolested OEM copy (IE in shrink wrap with COA sticker)from ebay. In the case you mention above, the COA sticker is literally not worth the paper its printed on.

    You can get the COA's on their own, but they are tied to the hardware (motherboard) they were origianlly shipped with. So the licence is technically non-transferrable. Doesnt stop people removing them and sticking them on another machine though.

    Dell seem to be sticking the COA's on the ram cover at the moment ;)

    If you follow the license terms to the letter you may find that if you upgrade an OEM version of Windows/Office ( I can't remember which one - but office 2000 is affected ) the upgrade license becomes "OEM" and is then bound to the original hardware !!!!

    If you can get and use the OEM with the supplied HW that would be ok though.
