Freespace 2... odd problem

    trying out FS2 but for some reason i cannot arm my ship with lasers/canons.
    each time says that the ship is unable to carry the weapon.
    but the tech specs states that it can.

    just wondering if anyone else has ever come across this problem
    any ideas welcome.
