Does anyone know if the recent change to the Commonwealth Games rules (seemingly inspired by Sonia O'Sullivan's selection for Australia, and to come into effect for the next Games in 2010) will have an impact on Northern Ireland athletes who opt to compete for Ireland (rather than Great Britain and Northern Ireland) in other international competitions?

I don't think that it will make a difference in the case of competing for Northern Ireland and Ireland as NI does not compete as a seperate country at any other time. Although it might be different if someone had dual nationality and wanted to compete for Ireland in the olympics and Wales in the Commonweaths though.

It doesn't make a difference. The CG is not covered by IAAF rules. So one can run for whoever they wish in the CG and not affect their eligibility in IAAF competitions. This was the aspect of the rule that SOS was to exploit.

If the CG comes under the IAAF umbrella then the loophole would be closed, but countries like England, Scotland, Wales, et al, all come under the UK flag under IAAF rules, so lots of athletes would be affected.
