My sister is looking for a new car. Its time to move her Punto on as it's very near the 100k milestone. Anyways she's narrowed it down to the following cars.
    - Skoda Fabia 1.4 Comfort
    - Seat Leon
    - Mazda 323 maybe
She needs something that will cope with the high miles...last year she covered 24,000 miles! Personally I want her to go for the Fabia because she can get a very new one within budget ('03-'04) She has a maximum of €12,000 to spend.
She doesn't like Focus's for some reason and anything French or Italian is a no no....
Ultimately I think a nice VAG Tdi would suit her needs better but the Golf is out of price range and Seat TDIs are difficult to come across within budget also. Anybody think of a car that we are overlooking? Anything under 1.4 is a no go also.

If she's doing that kind of mileage she'd be better off with the Mazda.

The Seat Ibiza and VW Polo are available in 1.4 TDi but are pretty rare due to their high price when new. The Fabia is the same size as these two as it based on them.

Also have a look at the Ford Fiesta as already mentioned:

If she was happy with the Punto then take a look at the Panda, it comes with a 1.3 multijet diesel engine that is supposed to be a good engine. A brand new one only costs just over €14,200 if she could stretch her budget. She would be getting a brand new car as apposed to a used one which will have a bit of mileage on it.

    Just spotted these also:

Friend of mine had a 323 (an '89) in college. Drove 100+ miles per day for 4 years & the car was 10 yrs old at that point. It's still going strong -well over 200,00 miles at this stage. Never anything but routine maintainance/regular servicing.

VW diesels are over-rated. I know a lot of people who had problems with Golfs, Bors & especially Passats. Not worth their money IMHO...

What's the reliability like on these newer Punto's?

Any idea what kind of mpg that 1.2 diesel gets?

Octavia diesel? 24k miles per year I think means diesel is the only option, and modern turbo-diesels are generally very good.

Pity all things French are out, some very good French diesel cars around, and they make good 2nd hand buys.

The Astra 1.7 DTi might also be an option, plenty under €12k and up to '03 models. Roomy enough and comfortable cars.

Hmm the Fiesta TDCI is definately a contender now.....her Punto is '99 so she wants to move up in years and if she could get up to '04 that would be great.
The Panda while a great idea (my Mam has one and never had any trouble) is not the best dynamically....all of her driving is country roads so she needs something that is dynamically able.
I've read around a bit on the Fiesta TDCI and its putting out 68bhp....I know that isn't gonna set her world alight but is it enough to comfortably/safely overtake traffic?

Not really sure about the cars themselves as I am not really into Fiats myself but the multijet diesels have received great reviews from the motoring press in general. I reckon that 55 - 60 mpg could achievable in a car the size of the Panda or Punto.
