Figures reveal big increase in low-fare airline flights
    03/04/2006 - 08:18:09

Low-fare airline flights have more than doubled worldwide in just five years, it was revealed today.

Budget airlines will operate more than 300,000 flights this month, compared with 142,000 in April 2001, figures from travel information company OAG showed.

The number of flights operated within Europe by low-cost carriers this month is 24% up on the April 2005 figure.

Worldwide, around 14% of all flights are now operated by no-frills operators who also account for 17% of all seats sold worldwide.

The number of total flights, including those from no-frills carriers, in and out of the UK in April 2006 is 5% up on the same month last year.

The total number of intercontinental flights to and from Europe is 10% higher than in April 2005, while the number of flights within Europe this month is the same as last April.

The big increase in flights in Europe is to and from eastern Europe, where services will increase by 13% this month compared with April 2005. Flights to and from Poland are 24% up.

In total, nearly 266.3 milion airline seats go on sale this month – 2% more than in April last year. The number of actual flights operating in April 2006 is about the same as last April at around 2.3 million.

Flights to and from the Middle East are 16% up, with the number of low-cost flights to the region double that of last April.

But the number of US domestic flights – which constitute by far the largest air transport market in the world – is 6% lower than in April 2005.

OAG business development manager Duncan Alexander said: “The continuing high cost of fuel is clearly having a sigificant effect on the world’s air transport industry.

“Although fuel prices obviously affect all airlines, the budget carriers have lower cost bases and, because they are generally smaller than their full-service counterparts, they can react more quickly and effectively to market trends.”
