Someone stole one of my car wheels during the night. I went to the toyota dealer and to replace the wheel rim will be €600 ex vat plus €100 for the tyre. They are 16" alloy wheels. I find €600 a bit expensive for a car wheel rim. Does anyone know where else one could get this part a bit cheaper?

You could get out the goldenpages and start ringing around breakers/scrap yards. You might have to travel though. But they might have some from a written off Avensis, just make sure it is not damaged.

Alternatively you could give a place called Traynor's in Co. Tyrone a ring, they specialise in used car parts and they deliver to Dublin and Galway as far as I know.

A long shot might be to browse through Buy and Sell or Ebay.

I would also suggest investing in a set up locking wheel nuts, they only cost around €40 for a set. Not a guarantee against alloy wheel thieft but it does make life more difficult for your average thief. Strange that they only took the one wheel though, they must have been disturbed or something.

that price seems about right I'm afraid, you can see why someone stole one. probably damaged theirs. Get some McGard wheel locks while you're at it.

Corolla Verso 04> wheels are the same too. if you're going to a breakers.

Would your theft insurance cover it? Even if it did, it mightn't be worth claiming for such a relatively small sum.

the excess would be around €350 and no claims would be lost. not worth it.

Some insurance policies allow you to claim up to a certain amount before it hits your NCB. Since the alloy wheels are original manufacturers spec on the car they should be covered. I would ring the insurance company to confirm if your NCB is impacted from making a claim for these. I would rather pay €350 of an excess towards them than the full €600 + Vat.

Why are they so expensive? I was playing the idea of putting 17" wheels on my Focus, and Ford want €800 for the set.

I have always found Toyota after market genuine accessories expensive and pretty limited. Things like alloy wheels, cd changers, etc are not cheap and dealers seem to be less flexible on the prices.

When I bought my Avensis 3 years ago I upgraded my alloys and tyres to 17" found on the T4 model in the UK for €300 after some very hard haggling with the dealer. I just found that they fit the arches better than the standard 16".
