I know the english still use it, probably jiust to remind them of bygone days when they were alot more powerful, but it has no legal standing in Ireland.

I found a link that explains the situation and here's a quote

The term has in the past been used in a purely geographical sense, to make clear Ireland's proximity to Britain.

However, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern has ruled that the term is not used by the Government and is without any official status.

It was made clear by him that the term is not recognised in any legal or inter-governmental sense.

It has been suggested in education circles that the Folens atlas highlights the need to have a checking system whereby all textbooks are checked to ensure they conform with the curriculum as outlined by the National Council for Curriculum Assessment.

The Irish Embassy in London has also been urged to monitor the media in Britain for "any abuse of the official terms as set out in the Constitution of Ireland and in legislation".

So problem solved . Good to see this one being put to bed..

Never heard of the Brittish People's Party confused.gif

They seem to be linked to the bnp and hate probably everything. I think they have ties with the uvf up north as well, pretty dodgy sorts really.

They were really pissed off with the removal of the term british isles from the folens atlas....

What horrible s**t did the Celts do?

Who f*cking knows? Someone bait the f*ck out of that Tulland man. Ah shur t'was probably the Brits again. I'm sure the Irish just played Horlin' all day whilst the mammies knitted. Get real. Maybe everyone in Europe should still be pissed at the Romans, and the Brits should be mad at the French for Hastings. Maybe I should devote all my time to getting the yanks to be held accountable for warcrimes against my relatives in Vietnam?

Or maybe I should just get on with my life knowing that there has never been an idyllic utopia in the history of mankind?

Does that have anything to do with the english calling themselves anglo saxon.

Do the upper class consider themselves german. The English seconds team in rugby is called the saxons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxons The saxons being a german tribe

They probably consider themselves no more German than the people from cardiff consider themselves Dragons, or Llanelli consider themselves scarlet :D

Obviously there has never been a perfect civilisation . But it's still important to know about what happened in the past both good and bad if only so those kind of things aren't repeated. I never said that the british should apologise or be held accountable for the past as that would be pointless. But they should still be made aware of the negative things of their past as well as the positive. The same would apply to any other country including ireland.

Slight difference there. Mystical animals and colours arn't races/tribes. Anglo Saxon. mmm... I'm not so sure.

I think the English might think they're half german themselves even with all the stick they give them. Strange indeed....

My primary teacher told me that the Irish were civilised when the english were still living in trees.

    So dont confuse the issue.

Fratton Fred has covered this. There is education about it. Unfortunately the history of the British Empire is incredibly vast and kids only have to study history up to the age of 13 or 14. Once you figure world history into this it doesn't leave a whole lot of elbow room. I myself have always had a keen interest in history (although it wanes between the Crusades and WWII- that's still a sh*tload of history), a lot of people don't.

This 'most people' stuff I wouldn't be too sure about. I'd imagine the majority of educated Britons are aware that there was some trouble between our two nations. Sorry but you'll have to get behind the Indians, the yanks, the ozzies, the canucks, the scots and the Northern Irish at this stage.

As for knowing the facts, are you telling me that the Celtic jersey wearing monkey with 26+6 tattooed on his knuckles knows sh*t all about history?

The monkey in the celtic jersey or their foreign equivalents is what results when people arent't taught history properly or are just ignorant of it.

A class or two on irish history would'nt eat up too much of the syllabus in british schools.

Late 19th-20th century history isn't really gotten into until GCSE age. At that stage, history is optional. I don't really see any reason for it to be mandatory.

But we shouldnt worry about the other countries.they went easy on the other countries -they were there only a hundred years or so.

they were here for 800 years as the tyrannical and evil despotic imperial oppressor that were role models for the nazis.

the other countries should say "we are the lucky ones look what they did to the Irish" and get behind us.

The United In United kingdom should stand for United in shame for what they did to us.

I just love you're balanced and unbiased view of history, even the westerns made by Hollywood in the 1930's treated the Indians more fairly. ;)

BTW don't forget how St Patrick was brought to Ireland!

PS I bet you've got English blood in yer family tree. :)

The English apparently are mainly descended from the germanic Angle and Saxon tribes who migrated to Britain from the 5th Century.

The aristocracy came from Normandy after the Norman invasion in 1066. You can see this in the usage of words:

    e.g

    shi*e saxon
    excrement french

The polite form is always the Norman one.

The Royal family is a European mixture.

the latest DNA evidence says different, the average englishman has more celtic in him/her than saxon
