I just noticed this on my mothers car and was wondering what the story is? Its a 01 BMW 316i and the tax disk says 1895cc. I thought any 316 would be 1.6l. Are all 316i 1.9l so?

The pre 1999 316i was a 1.6. From 1999 onwards the 316i and 318i are 1.9 litre, the difference being that the 316i having less bhp than the 318i. From 2006 the new 316i is 1.6 again.

    German logic I guess

BMW have been at that for ages, Mercedes do it too. The worst offender, though, must be SAAB - the current 9-3 1.8t is actually a 2.0...

Its because they're getting so heavy that engines matching the badge (316=1.6, 318=1.8 etc) can't cope. My ould fella's '03 318i is actually a 2 litre too.

Nah it's not that simple ;)

In fact quite the opposite of what you are saying:

    2006 316 = 1.6
    2005 316 = 1.8
    2002 316 = 1.9
