Also another poster mentioned the music for the Racoons cartoon was pretty good, it was too!, the main theme at least, here's the lyrics:

I watched the Chuck Norris cartoon linked on that site, and frankly it may just be the most awesome thing I've seen in my life. He fights waves of the world's worst ninjas every four minutes! He hosts a gala charity dinner attended only by him and his four gaudily-attired friends, but it's interrupted by ninja attacks anyway! He punches flying ninjas out of his way as he calmly walks to the lift, which he later randomly destroys before he has any reason to! He chases a private jet in a wooden biplane! He survives having this same biplane hit with a cruise missile! He does all of this without displaying anything even approximating an emotion or non-neutral facial expression! SUPER-NINJA!

Yeah, me neither, although I did own a Chuck Norris toy I now think was based on that show. If I had seen it, it probably would have challenged my entire religious understanding God being God the Father, God the Son and Optimus Prime.

Anyone remmember this childrens programme where the main character lived on earth but was from another planet and used contact her home by putting her finger up to her forehead and a light would come out and through the galaxy to her planet?

Also, anyone remmember a cartoon where the main characters were young and they used travel around on hovering boards? I have a vague memory of it that came to me when I came to this thread....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭the Shades

Ooh.. the hoverboards somehow brought my mind to another classic old cartoon: Muppet Babies! Not going to help you remember what that cartoon was but MB used to have me up early every Saturday morning and then later watching it every day after school on the Den. Absolutely loved it.

Brilliant :D I think thats the first time I've remembered the muppet babies since the last time I watched it on TV. They rocked.

What was great in the 80's were all the Chalopin's cartoons. Jean Chalopin and his fellows Bernard Deyriès and Bruno Bianchi were (are) great guys.
The list of Chalopin's cartoons on imdb.com isn't even complete (he did live shows too like the Hitchhiker but he isn't even credited for that):

Creator of DIC (he was 21 then), author, scenarist, director, producer of many shows.
Inspiring model (hair and beard stuff) for Ulysses and Audric, the father of Jayce (they look pretty similar, don't you think   ) ... and also said to be Inspector Gadget's model in some ways.:D :D:D

At the begining of the 80's, he brought fresh air to animation, stopping the Hannah & Barbera monotony. He worked with the japanese, moving to Japan (Ulysses 31, Mysterious Cities of Gold, the 2 masterpieces), then with the americans, moving to the US, combining the best of the 3 countries. French DIC became american due to major US investment and produced great cartoons (Jayce and the Wheelie Warriors, Inspector Gadget, Pole Position, Rainbow Brite, Popples, Heathcliff, the Littles, Mask ...., all created or writen or produced by Chalopin, directed by Deyriès and Bianchi). DIC was the 1st cartoon producer in the world. He was regularly appearing on the french kids' show and is a part of our childhood memory as "Ulysses' and Jayce's Dad".

At the end of the 80's, he was pushed to sell DIC to american hands. Then to leave the artistic control of the company. So he left the US and came back to home country, and created a new company which produced :
    - the Diplodos
    - Heroes on Hotwheels
    - King Arthur and the Knights of Justice
    - Bot's Master
    - Sophie and Virginie,
    - The Twins of destiny
    ....

But at the begining of the 90's, the french channels who were now Chalopin's only funders didn't want to invest into animation any more and the french cartoons disapeared. The Chalopin's and the other french cartoons (like "once upon a time....Life/Space/Man...", "Spartakus and the Sun beneath the Sea", "Clementine", "Seabert", "Rahan"...) were gone. Along with the japanese and most of the american ones.:(

It was the end of the golden age where animation and kids shows were huge on French TV. I haven't really heard of DIC's shows since Chalopin left. If the french animation suffered hell in the 90's, US animation suffered too, from having called off such a great creative guy.

What was wonderfull in the 80's was the diversity of the animation available for kids. Typical entertaining american animation (I looove Captain Caveman and Scoubidou), great french/ japaneses and french/ american (japanese execution) coproductions, serious/educational but entertaining French animation and great quality Japanese animation (we had tons of it during this golden era of japanimation, unllike today's average production).

The good news is that french TVs are getting interested in animation again and that french shows and coproductions are back. Some french shows are ... too american (I mean they are just meant for fun like "totally spies") or too japanese (like Code Lyoko) so they don't really have that "something different" but some are really great like the franco-japanese Oban Star Racers or the stylish Skyland which are both sailing to your shores along with the Renaissance movie. And Chalopin could come back with the Mysterious Cities of Gold as the project seems now on track. Diversity may be coming back. And I think US animation and japanese animation may benefit from this emulation like in the 80's since I'm pretty sure cooperations will occur. ;)

Chalopin is the 80's animation "Pope" but he isn't credited anywhere for his wonderful job. It's a real shame. Even in France, he is not credited. But all the 20-35 have heard of him. The nostalgia generation which is getting mature (we had such great programs then, I mean real quality, that current shows for our kids seem shamefull). If Chalopin comes back with the Mysterious Cities' movie, I'm pretty sure he will finally get the tribute he deserves (at least in France ...:p ).

The best part is that twenty minutes of culturally-stereotyping, ninja-punching madness is somehow supposed to teach you a lesson about bullies being cowards or some damn thing. Like being picked on by purple ninjas with 80s hair and cruise missiles was such a serious concern for Americas youth that Chick Norris felt he had to speak out against it.

Vicky the Viking.....all summer first thing in the morning on ITV.

    Pole Position

and Victor and Hugo which I thought was the funniest cartoon ever.

Has anyone watch a Count Duckula since they grew up? There's so much tongue in chhek and sexual inuendo in that cartoon.

No, you're spot-on. It was standard animation until they went into battle & used their 'enhanced imaging' then it went to 3D :

There's episodes on YouTube too IIRC

Also, has anybody mentioned Defenders of the Earth yet? Classic, Flash Gordon plus a couple of nobodies from old comics(Phantom, Mandrake the magician), a token black guy whose name I forget, and their children/sidekicks who always ended up saving everyone. And MING!

Yer man's name was Lothar & he was Mandrake's mate, Dubs might remember the two of them from the Mandrake strip in the Evening Herald (donkey's years ago).

The Chuck Norris thing sounds a bit like the Mr. T cartoon. He'd drive around the US with a bus full of kids (for some reason) solving crime & beating up bad guys. At the end or every episode, T himself (not a cartoon) would give a moral message and say 'take it from me, Mr. T'

One of my favourite cartoons ever was "Once Upon a Time...The Americas". Eacdh episode was about a different event/period in American history.

    Spartakus was some depressing cartoon.

Loved the Racoons! Cyril Sneer always reminded me of Charlie Haughey when I was younger :D

Doctor Snuggles flying away to the stars!

This is not a cartoon, but does anyone remember a programme called Storybook International. The "storyteller" in the opening credits was fair annoying...."In Germany I'm Johann, in England I am John" oh feck off!!

Absolutely loved Storybook International. Never missed it. It was class.

Loved some of the cartoons previously mentioned by other posters, including Thundercats, Gummie Bears (I always wanted some of the Gummie berry juice :) ), Captain Planet and Girl of Tomorrow (She was hot!).

Some other memories from childhood include Top Cat and Bananaman (that geeky kid Eric, who ate a banana and turned into an adult superhero) and also Round The Twist (I know it wasn't a cartoon, but it was still good) :D
