Ive just moved to Lucan and the house had NTL Cable broadband installed thats still on the freebie trial, before I was spoiled with a 3mb/24:1 DSL from Netsource which in all was a top quality service, circa 30ms pings to UK jolts.

Im looking at the ping to UK Jolts and Im not impressed, circ 200ms - Is it always like this?

C:\>ping -t www.jolt.co.uk

Pinging www.jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=199ms TTL=51
Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=223ms TTL=51
Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=207ms TTL=51
Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=205ms TTL=51
Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=218ms TTL=51
Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=224ms TTL=51
Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=204ms TTL=51

Overall whats the service like from NTL, im considering my options for broadband at the moment and i dont like the idea of caps 2gb /month on basic. lol. I download more than this every day.

Thx for the response, thats looks more like what im used to, is it always like that? have you had any probs with NTL?

Looks like there is a big diff in the Quality of Service between 1mb and 6mb, if I did go NTL I would probably go 6mb.

Ingame the ping is around 260. /me thinks they changed the priority of ICMP (ping) packets to make pings look good.

Traceroute shows the problem better, 1st one to www.jolt.co.uk:-

I'm getting average 25ms to Jolt.

I use to have Netsource 2m DSL. I find NTL to be much better, much more stable with less downtime. Also you get much closer to the advertised speed then with Netsource.

BTW NTL don't have a trial, they have the first three months for free, but you are actually now on a 12 month contract with them.

Thanks for the useful info.

I can get out of the contract, easy peasy, I just moved in and the service was there its the previous tennant who is on a the 12 month contract 2 months into the free 3 months. Id just be saving them having to pay for 9 months. lol.

Eircon have connected up the phone line as they can only tell me if they can do DSL if the line is enabled so they can test it. I got them to agree only to connect the line permanantly if they can provide DSL.

NTL scares me TBH, the customer service is non-existant- for example I called them today to ask about a static IP and they didnt know what that was, I have a nice tape of this, its Hilarious, kept me entertained all afternoon listening to irt. I think I will only go with them if I cant get DSL.

I never had any problems with Netsource over Blackrock way after they sorted out the network congestion issues 2 years ago, they even gave me a couple of free months for helping them test the new access points.

to be fair once the upgrades are over , the service is pretty good, ie if you are on 6mb you will get 6mb or more.

customer service is comical though

That is strange, I find the CS to be excellent, best I've ever experienced, when I first signed up, for some fun I asked some questions about Linux support and while she certainly couldn't answer all my questions, she actually was pretty knowledgeable of it. Must CS just drool and ask "what is Linux?".

I'd get a life if I was you!:D Listening to tapes of CS reps.....hmmmm!:o

In fairness, I wonder how many people actually make that enquiry on a daily basis (to any operator) and I wonder how many of them would know the correct response. Just a thought......:)

BTW I had the same question about static IP's as you coming from Netsource.

NTL don't officially supply static IP's, however my IP has never changed, for well over a year now and this includes after plenty of modem reboots, etc.

I've never heard of NTL IP's changing.

I been switching the NTL between the lappy and the pc and get a different ip on each.

I been testing the NTL over the week and packet loss is dire, 2-5% on/off, no good for gaming.

I think im going to get both and use a linux box to direct the traffic between the 2 for downloads and then have the netsource for big downloads/gaming.
