Dsl light off, intermittant dropped connection

Was wondering if anyone can help.

I have BT broadband and am using a Netgear wireless router/modem.

When I am not surfing the net the DSL light on the router goes off
and I have to dial my home phone or lift the receiver on the phone
for the DSL to come back on and re-establish a connection.

Obviously this is far from the always on connection that I need.
I have the phone and router plugged into the one phone point through
a double filter. The same problem occurs with the BT supplied modem too.
Have tries disconnecting the phone and it makes no difference

I have my alarm connected to the phone line too, but the alarm company
has looked at it and say it is wired properly.

    Any ideas ??

BT says no line problems either.

Try connecting the router to the phone socket directly and test the connection.

If there is no problems then the filter is at fault. Also make sure the actual socket connections are sound as I had a problem like this only that if someone just tipped against the wire the DSL would drop.

Also are the router and phone plugged into the correct points on the filter ?

    Hope this helps,

Will try suggestions and get BT to send out new filters.
When I pick up the phone I can hear some high pitched sounds,
could this be a symptom of a faulty filter ?

    Thanks

If you are still having problems after trying bishoplens suggestions, try a forum search for posts by "Redshift". Came across a post of his awhile back about installing DSL and alarm together.

    Thanks for the replies.

I have looked at my Router stats when I am connected at various times:

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1024 kbps 128 kbps
Line Attenuation 48 db 15 db
Noise Margin 7 db 21 db

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 736 kbps 128 kbps
Line Attenuation 45 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 6 db 20 db

Would I be correct in saying that the Noise Margins are very low ?
Could this be causing the intermittant drops ? Can anything be
done on the line to improve the numbers, eg increase the gain ??

Is it my ISPs responsibility (BT) or Eircom to do this ?

    Thanks in advance

You would have to go to BT first; they would escalate the problem to Eircom.

Yes, your downstream noise margins look extremely unhealthy. Anything below 12db is not stable and continuous drops would be expected. I current lyhave 30db on my line and the connection is bang on solid and in my parents house, they have 40db - even better. Try disconnecting phones from the line or any other telephony equipment and see if that improves your noise margins. Also ensure you have adequate microfilters installed.
