Removing Paint from Bricks

I'm buying a red-brick victorian house, the problem is that one of the previous owners has painted the exterior red. Why anyone would do that I don't know? What is the best way to get the paint off? Weeks of scrubbing with litres of white spirit? Or is there any other option?
