Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Your favourite football fairytale... ?

A post in another thread got me thinking about all those wonderful football moments that can be up there amongst the proudest moments of your life.

Obviously recent Manchester United and Liverpool successes will dominate this thread, and understandably so. But I'm interested in everyones favourite fairytale moment in soccer, be it on the pitch or off it, or whatever you think yourself.

For myself, I find it hard to look past the last ever game and last ever goal at The Dell, against Arsenal. Not only was it the last game at the stadium Southampton had used for over 100 years, but it was Matt Le Tissier, the single greatest player and servant to have pulled on a Saints shirts' last game for us.

With about 15 or 20 minutes to go, in the ultimate token gesture, Francis Benali and Le Tiss were brought off the bench to a rapturous reception. With the score at 1-2, and roughly 90 seconds left on the clock, the ball dropped on the edge of the Gunners box, about three or four feet away from Le Tiss. Ignoring Chris Marsden racing through, Le Tiss (facing his own goal) turned and hit probably the sweetest left foot drive of his career. I needn't even bother explain the celebrations...

The perfect farewell to a great ground and a great player. And special mention to Francis Benali as well!

Well call me biased, but the first one that springs to mind is the 1999 Champion's League final. No need to even explain that one!

The good fairytale that makes your heart warm

0-0 Celtic Park 98 never will football get more sweeter, irish team me arse.

Utd 99 if you keep trying......

Pool 05 Again if you keep trying.....

Pats Bohs 4-3 FAI cup we wanted it more.

The Evil fairytale that makes you smile

    Martin Chukwu

Shels stole our league title on 2001, mainly for the Cl spot and a team from Malta with the now legendary Martin Chukwu beat them over 2 legs. Oh how i pissed myself laughing as we won our 1st ever tie over 2 legs in Europe that season.

Roddy jumping ship on Dublin City when battling Rovers for final relegation spot and they eventually relegating the team he jumped to the following season.

When I think of 99, I never think of the CL final, I always think of the FA Cup final.

The peno save then the goal is to me always a greater comeback than the CL final.

1995 - Blackburn are losing to Liverpool but both sets of fans are celebrating as United can only manage a draw with West Ham and Rovers win the League.

Just seeing the smile on Jack Walker's face after all the money he'd put into the club was worth it. Blackburn did buy the title and some people resented that, and still do, but I couldn't have given a toss.

Liverpool vs Arsenal 1989 or Liverpool vs Milan

Hmmm.... This is going to be Liverpool biased but anywho...

The Liverpool vs Newcastle game in '96 (I think, feel free to correct). Score was 4-3 to the 'pool and it was one of the greatest games I ever seen. That game was the start of my true obsession with Liverpool (I had been a fair weather fan up till that ;) )

Liverpool vs Alaves in the UEFA cup final in 2001 (I think that's the year). I was at work during it but we had a TV on down the back where I kept sneaking off to have a watch :)

Liverpool vs AC Milan... obvious reasons :D What a game, a legendary comeback that I will probably not see the likes of again for a long long time.

One of my best memories though is an Irish soccer one. It's the WC2002 qualifiers. Ireland, drawing 0-0 with Holland are down to 10 men. Things are looking bad for Irelands hope of qualification then Mcateers scores a beaut of goal from a perfect cross from Finnan. So so happy :D

Was not around but I always feel proud of the Celtic team of 1966-67 season, they won every competition they entered and became the 1st British club and the 1st non-latin club to win the European Cup.
The Lisbon Lions is the nickname given to the Glasgow Celtic team that won the European Cup at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon, Portugal on May 25, 1967, defeating Inter Milan 2-1. All the members of this team were born within 25 miles of Glasgow, Scotland, making Celtic the only club in European football history to have won the European Cup with a team comprised entirely of home-grown talent.

I'm an Everton supporter so the proudest moment in my footballing life was in 1995 when we beat Man UTD in the FA Cup final. I remember the goal by Paul Rideout clearly and Peter Schmeichael's look afterwards.

In fact, I was so elated by the goal that I jumped up out of the couch and started banging my head against the tall, metal filing cabinet!

    May 26th 1989.

The most unbelieveable finish to a League season anywhere, ever.

This is it for me. Dave Rogers cracking home THAT volley to book Shels' place in the next round of the CL qualifiers and a meeting with Depor. This was with about 15 mins left and we knew that we needed a goal after losing 3-2 in Split. It looked like one of those nights where it wasn't going to come and then suddenly, this belter. To cap it off, Alan Moore scored a second to put the game beyond doubt. The celebrations after the match in front of the New Stand were excellent.

Also, seeing Wes Hoolahan teasing the Depor players in Lansdowne was the stuff of legends.

    Do you mean semi-final?

Was thinking about this in work earlier again, and remember aul Jimmy Glass. Don't think fairytales come much sweeter than his. Back down to earth with a bang though, from saving his football club from liquidation to driving a taxi and working in an office... what a contrast!

He has a book on Amazon if anyone is interested...

Here's the story behind the goal...

    And the goal itself...

Imagine getting into a taxi and it was him driving it!

And lets not forget Glen Fitz's two goals against Lille! Three classic games in a month, that was an unbelievable time to be a Shels fan.

Just about made up for Chukwu :D That s.o.a.b. made me fall down the steps in the New Stand!

For me '99 will always be about Man City coming from 2-0 down in the final minutes of the 2nd Division (at the time) play offs to force extra time and eventually win on penalties, leading to one of the greatest chants ever at Maine Road - "you can stick your fcuking treble up your arse!"

Im sure MrJoeSoap will love this but the highlight so far of this season is Southampton v Leeds at St. Marys. 18 minutes left on the clock and Southampton are winning 3-0. Game over? Not a chance. Leeds score 4 goals in the last 18 minutes, the last one scored by Liam Miller, for one of the best come backs I have ever seen. Wipes the floor with Liverpools and Man Utds famous comebacks.

Watching the Reds win our first league title in 30 years in Oriel Park in 1992.

After suffering relegation and the near death of our famous club, we finally get back to the top of Irish football. Title won with a 3-1 on the ground of the outgoing champions and sealed with a stunning 25 yard strike from Brian Flood. :)

Another one for me which I stupidly forgot, 4-1 down to Middlesbrough at home with 10 mins to go. We make an unbelieveable comeback in the last few mins to square the game at 4-4. The look on the Boro fans was funny, they were celebrating us scoring our second goal too just to take the piss, they were quiet when Drury scored our 4th

Oh stop, we're specialists in blowing 3 goal leads! :D

    Remember Tranmere?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LZrDI72FWA

Just watched that Tranmere video there, Andy Gray is such a tool.

44 mins on the clock, Southampton go 3-0 up - "And that surely puts the tie beyond Southampton"

70 mins on the clock, Tranmere come back to 3-2 - "Well who said this tie was over? Not me, never believed it."
