I am opposed to the county council taking any land off UCD for non-student housing. Wheather we would prefer travellers or setteled people on the land is irrelevant. The council owns plenty of land. it is lazy of them to try to force any non educational development onto UCD.

I totally agree. With such a large student population any land available to UCD should be used *for* UCD.

Haven't been keeping up to date on this one...

We've dealt with travellers for years at home. They've cut off the water supply to our animals, left bits of broken glass in our fields, terrorised the local shopowner - but that's just a small group of them. While ok, none of the above is desirable, and has all happened, it's not an everyday occurrance. There's a vast mistrust amongst the settled community for the travelling community, and it's sickening. As far as I can see the main reason settled people dislike travellers is because they don't understand that they aren't just settled people living in movable accommodation. They have their own language, customs and culture, and I think we should respect that. They're very private, as we should respect that.

I'm all for realism and I understand there are a number of implications should a halting site be located in or near UCD, as I do agree that we should use that land to develop more student accommodation. But as much as individuals have offended people, the fact is that not everyone can be generalised into the behaviour of an individual.

I would agree with this. I also don't know how suitable a university campus really is for bring up children, to my mind it's not likely to be condusive to family life. Drinking, socialising etc, all the stuff students do probably isn't the best example for small children.

What do you expect from people? :p

In all fairness, they're portrayed as society's bogeyman. Unfortunately, this is because there's some degree of truth in this. :(

In no way at all would I claim all Travellers are scumbags. Horrible generalisation. But yes, I've seen damage done to areas 'halted' in, and I've seen the fear people have for them. Where my granny lived down in Kerry had a Travelling community. As an old woman on her own she was quite fearful of them. (See the Nally/Nalty (can't remember name) case for a reason why)

Personally, I just don't see any reason for a Halting Site in UCD. Why?

    1. We're students - messy, alcoholic and not exactly a good example for children.
    2. What facilities are available? Where will children go to school, for example.

Long time lurker from the trinity forum, first time poster on the UCD forum.

I grew up beside UCD and am very familiar with the long running halting site debate.

It's important to consider the impact of large numbers of people spending a few brief years passing through what is in effect a very sedate suburb. The loud noise, the increased traffic, the drinking, the stealing of traffic cones, the increased level of litter - the impact that the students of UCD have had on the local area is generally underestimated. Reading this thread i've discovered that there's even people from Tallaght coming to UCD, the college is bringing all sorts of types into what used to be such a nice area.

I'll be writing to the local councillor looking for the closure of UCD, i don't want any of those student types in what is after all a residential area.

In fairness, that's quite funny. Although note the irony of an outsider moving into UCD territory to say it...

I think he/she is trying to draw a parallel between the prejudice held by some toward travelers and toward people from tallaght but that like most of the other parallels drawn I think it is very inaccurate, though I’m sure the local residents oft have cause to mourn the loss of their precious traffic cones!

hmmm... perhaps, they may well have been sincere.

OT: Anyone else think this thread has served its purpose and should be locked?

I'd say your prob right, it has served its purpose but that said I see no reason to lock it while it's on topic and civil, if nobody has anything to add it'll go to that happy place in the sky where all old threads go:)

I took the trouble to e-mail a Councillor, I would appreciate it if we could wait for his answer.

Not me... just don't post in it anymore if you don't want to, no need to ruin it for others.

I don't think it's served its purposem, but some people have been less than pleasant in their descriptions of Travellers. Pity we can't discuss this in a balanced way...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,894 ✭✭✭Chinafoot

While all of that does make for a really interesting discussion (new thread maybe?) back on topic.

    Heh heh, see?
I had a point... (Though everyone decided to miss it)

Anyway, carry on with your train-wreck, I don't fink that Councillor is gonna bother replyin' to Firespinner tbh. Just my opinion, don't bite my head off for it.

That bastard has lost my vote if he does not at least acknowledge my e-mail. Though please, Seb, tell me why I'm not worth replying to? (Don't frown this is good practice for marraige)

Not a nice way to describe an elected representitive, is it?

I think we should wait for the Councilllor's reply before lockage.

Lets all hold our collective breath waiting for that response. On the count of three...

Excuse the cynicism, but it's never going to happen. You might get a reply from an independent - they're usually desperate for the attention.

    Agreed.
This thread is now purely of value in terms of an experiment as to "how long can you keep an idiot in suspense?"

You get a piece of paper, write "Please turn over" on both sides, and fetch a stopwatch and a bag of popcorn.

If people keep asking him if he's Swedish, this'll never Finnish! *owwww, ok, that one even hurt me!*

Or write gullible on his face and tell him he has gullible written all over him. Hey, it worked with the ceiling in DramSoc. ;)
