On Friday night at 9pm on Sky..
    Almost Famous (2000)

A teenage rock journalist gets an assignment following a band on tour, to the horror of his over-protective mother. As he struggles to work out what makes the group's enigmatic lead guitarist tick and falls for a free-spirited groupie, the young writer is forced to grow up fast as the manic world of rock 'n roll threatens to overwhelm him. Seventies-set comedy drama, starring Patrick Fugit, Billy Crudup, Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand
My favourite Cameron Crowe movie.. absolutely love it!

Well written, fantastic performances and a superb soundtrack!

Wednesday, BBC1, 23:15: Copycat. It's a cops & murderer story with some genuinely nasty twists. Sigourney Weaver is an expert in psychological profiling of criminals, but who has some psychological problems of her own after being a victim of a crime herself. You can probably guess what happens next, in outline, but it's all about the details. Not a film for those of a nervous disposition about crime.

From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch’.

Almost Famous was on tonight as well. Sky (and a few other channels) usually repeat the same movie a few times a week. Probably one of the best movies on telly in the last while.

TV3, 03:25 Tuesday morning: Rising Sun. Michael Douglas and Sean Connery have a few problems with Japanese businessmen in the USA. Not for those who hate Michael Crichton stories: politically-correct he ain't, and neither are his characters.

Dunno if this was ever mentioned, might be worth inclusion in a sticky if not already, but you can just go here, select "movies", "all channels" then "today" or "tomorrow" or any day of the next week, (along with "evening and night" if you work for The Man during the day!) and hit the search button.

Doesn't seem like there's much on today or tomorrow, mind.

One of my favourite films is on Channel 4 (UK) at 1am Saturday morning: The Ice Storm (1997). It's a look at life in 70s suburbia, where what appear to be "normal" lifestyle choices have startling and even tragic consequences. This is what Ang Lee did immediately after Sense and Sensibility, but this is no Jane Austen novel. There's some black humour, then there comes a point where it's not funny any more, but it's not a depressing film, I thought.

Star: Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Allen, Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, and Elijah Wood. The kids are well cast, and are crucial to the story.

Late notice, but Gridlock'd is on BBC1 right now, just started. Fantastic film starring Tim Roth, Tupac Shakur and Thandi Newton about 2 friends who decide to kick drugs after seeing their flatmate overdose. Really entertaining movie, give it a watch if youve nothing better to do. Roth and Shakur are fantastic in it.

TG4 is showing Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid at 9PM tonight (with the obligatory break at 9:30 for the lottery results in Klingon). I haven't seen it yet, but it's a highly-regarded Sam Peckinpah Western with a stellar cast: James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson, Jason Robards, Harry Dean Stanton ... Rita Coolidge ... Bob Dylan? :pac:

Dunno if this counts as a recommendation but if you like cheesy action movies featuring obvious "sub Wild Geese" type carry on then Commando Leopard (1985) might be your cuppa. Movies4Men 9:00pm-11:05pm

Into The Storm - BBC 2 tonight at 8.30pm
Drama sequel to the Emmy award-winning The Gathering Storm, charting Winston Churchill's rise to power as prime minister, his dogged determination to lead the country to victory in World War II, and his devastating loss of power in the 1945 general election.

The Sorcerers (1967) BBC 2 in the wee small hours.

An elderly scientist and his wife discover a way of reliving their youth by hypnotising a young man to obey their every command. However, the temptation to force their puppet to perform increasingly depraved acts proves too strong to resist - and brings terrifying consequences in its wake. British horror, starring Boris Karloff, Catherine Lacey, Ian Ogilvy, Elizabeth Ercy and Susan George

    Director Michael Reeves

I finally caught up with this last year and its well worth seeing, on its own terms its an effective low budget drama with some fine performances from Boris Karloff and Catherine Lacey. One for those who appreciate tension over "horror".
