Another daytime classic on Channel 4: Brief Encounter (1945). A very English film, written by Noel Coward, about the passions lurking beneath genteel middle-class personalities. Two strangers meet on a train ... a surprise hit in the USA, where it was nominated for three Oscars. It's such an iconic film that it's been referenced and parodied many times.

From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch’.

Classic movie on later. Much later. 02:35-05:00 on UTV: The Day of the Jackal. Not the remake with Bruce Willis, but the original with Edward Fox as the assassin on a mission to knock off Charles De Gaulle in Paris. Some call it slow, I call it atmospheric and absorbing. We see a lot of chilling detail about how the Jackal design, tests and conceals his weapon, for example.

Not really - it's just that I'm more likely to have seen them. :p Plus: I look on this thread as a way of helping people with their cinematic education. You're not going learn about Film (with a Capital F) by watching most films produced in the last quarter century.

12:35am, Film4: Battle Royale. The perfect film for grumpy old men in training. In future Japan, teenagers are so out of control that the adults decide to shock them in to behaving: by kidnapping a whole class from high school, attaching explosive collars around their necks, and leaving them on an island with a lot of weapons and instructions to bump each other off. Or else.

BBC2, Saturday 2:05PM: Singin' In The Rain. If you haven't seen this, you really should, and there's a lot more to it than Gene Kelly's famously wet dance number. It documents the shaky transition to sound in the movies, and what happened when silent movie stars had to start talking ...
