I broke my front tooth about 6 weeks ago and as a result need a root canal and a crown.people have told me they'd rather lose a limb than have root canal treatment, could someone tell me if this pain myth is justified or not, because i'm bricking it.:( thanx

also should i be worried too much about how the crown will look compared to my other front tooth or has the latest technology allowed dentists to match them up pretty good.thanx again

    Hi,

I've had root canal done 3 times and it's really not sore. I had molars done, so I'm not certain whether the area (in your mouth) would make any difference to the amount of pain.

I really don't recall experiencing any pain... maybe some discomfort afterwards but definitely nothing during the procedure (anesthetics! great stuff!)

RCT should not hurt. I had it done on a back tooth i broke. The worst bit was keeping my gob open for ages.

I've had root canal done 3 times also - on two upper front teeth (one had to be done again a year later). It's not painful once your numbed up. let your dentist know if you feel pain - most will administer a bit more anaesthetic. The whole root canal thing is a wee bit uncomfortable - but most dental procedures are IMO. It's not painful. I heard the same horror stories before I got mine done and all proved false. I've had an apesectomy done too - very uncomfortable but still no pain. Best to get the root canal done to avoid a possible apesectomy in the future - expensive stuff.

Best of luck with your choppers!!! - You'll be OK.

I was just at the dentist yesterday, a filling came out and took half the tooth with it. Seems I need root canal work too. The monetary pain is all I'm worried about, €750 or there abouts I was told :( The alternative is extraction, which I don't fancy too much either as there'll be a tooth missing. It's a molar which isn't so bad, but I've read that it can cause problems with the other teeth moving when one is missing.

Have to go back in two weeks, then it's make your mind up time. Anyone chosen extraction over root canal?

750??? Wow  ... I was quoted 400 by a dentist in Rathmines last year... ended up just having the tooth out cause I couldnt afford it at the time after buying a car etc and I was in constant agony and couldnt bare the pain anymore.. I wish now Id waited or borrowed the money... I'm Never letting another tooth go without a fight.. It was a back tooth but if I laugh or smile really big u can just about see the gap ... Oh well

The price depends on which tooth is is...the further back the more it cost because thay have more roots. 750 for a back molar tooth is about right. Remember to get a med 2 form to claim back you tax. Remember also if it is a back tooth or any tooth you may need a crown to protect it from breaking....ask you dentist....no point in spending money for it only to break in a few years and have to be taken out anyway

There's not much to be scared of with root canals, I had one when I was a teenager because I had an abcess, and it was one of the most painful things i've ever experienced, and even with several injections of anaesthetic it was still painful.

But I have had 2 root canals for cosmetic reasons, and they were totally painless.

i had 3 of my front teeth root canal'd can't say it hurt much, actually the dentist had lots of fit nurses that seemed to walk around and do nothing so it was actually quite an enjoyable experence ;)
(ironically enought the most painfull out of the the things i've had done was anaestetic one time, he pumped some redilicous ammount of it in, was numb for ages...but hurt getting so much in......)

eth0_ not to pry, so don't answer if ye like, but cosmetic reasons? that mean to stop a tooth darkening from a nerve die'n?

No nothing like that, I had a missing tooth and got a bridge to replace it, one of the supporting teeth was a bit crooked so my dentist did a root canal and I think the crown on that tooth and the bridge are joined together.

Afaik I PRSI will not cover Root Canal treatment. Well maybe its just I havent been paying tax long enough. I was quoted €400 for a Root Canal and I'm also getting a few fillings. For the fillings PRSI will for €30 per €55 filling which isnt too bad at all. No Discount on the rct though.
