Having spent far too many days online in general and then having a week and a bit to type up Chapter One of my magnus opus (also known as my thesis) I've realised how much all of the UCD Forumers spend online.

Mind, I am a notorious net recluse anyway so I am neither preaching nor asking for forgiveness or something.

My question: How much time do you spend online?

And more pertintly what in Gods name are you doing? What is there to see?

I post on numerous forums debating topics like Salons, Immigration, CD's, Value for money, genres and oratory.

    You?

Most of the time on boards =UCD, fashion and appearance, after hours and the cuckoo's nest
Half the time = msn chattin to people
    Sometimes =bebo

then in between I check my emails

I have no idea how much time I spent online. During the week if I'm in the library I just leave myself logged in while I'm studying and have a browse every now and then. At weekends it's a lot less, just checking in with emails and things.

As for what I do....boards, bebo, crazy obsession with puzzle bobble, livejournal, the odd bit of actual looking for articles for study, library catalogue, blackboard, gmail chat, messenger, an msn poetry group (don't all laugh together now) and I used to use bbc boards but then they changed the format and it's pants....and and **** where you should all visit (Scraggs, it's full of Carlow people).

aaaaahaha, mine's not due for another three weeks. savage.

me, i don't want to think about how much time i spend on the internet. unless i'm actively working on writing, i usually have boards and a few other messageboards running constantly the whole day. i made something like a hundred posts on thumped.com last week. cringe

I don't spend much time at all really. The only place I can access the internet is in college, and when I'm there I'm primarily in lectures and from now on, studying. It's really hard to keep up with the amount of activity on this forum, which is primarily the only one in which I'm involoved. I also really pleased that I have managed 16 days (and counting...) without logging into bebo (if only because it's a pile of ****e).

My method of avoiding random browsing is to write down a list of things that interest me/things that I want to find out over a period of a week, and then spend one session looking them all up. It's too easy to get hooked otherwise.

Spend a fair bit of time online. Mostly on MSN to people, but I often make use of the numerous sites with free drum lessons.

Time online has been cut significantly over the past while with essays and study.

Majority of time is spent here trying to keep you pups in order :p and on IRC.

Bah, I've only to do a little introduction type thing, so its not so bad really but I want it to sound horrific for the sympathy factor.

At the rest of you, the amount of hours you spend on here and the activities you gave as excuse leads me to conclude you spend most of your time doing some secret internet club thing.

I just realised I spend a lot of time on Irelands secret graffiti website watching people battle each other over hilariously pointless things in the real world but hugely important in that world.

Oh.. and of course I sometimes use the internet for downloading porn and music, which is its primary function afterall!

/me hums "The Internet Is For Porn" :p

I spend far too much time online. Right now, I'm working on my Data Structures and Algorithms practical that's due tomorrow, 4 of my Firefox tabs at the moment are stuff related to that. As well as that, I've got boards, Livejournal, AngryPotato.net and Gamespot forums open, along with Gmail and my UCD email.
I spend about 5-6 hours a day online... that sounds scary when I put it that way!

    I live online sadly.

I miss the days when I used to live on computer games and TV. :(

Yesterday for example I spent over 10 hours online.

Bar lectures, I'm pretty much online all day. It helps though that i'm doing computer science, so all of my work, research, and studying involve being on computers. I completely abuse firefox's tabs, usually with about 15-20 open, with various emails, boards, ucd related accounts, several googled topics, and whatever else I feel like doing open.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,326 ✭✭✭pretty*monster

I can happily spent an entire day online mostly reading this and the newswire, obsesivly checking my four e-mail accounts, Reading feminist blogs, reading my mates blogs, getting sucked into bebo, chatting on msn, downloading music and porn, randomly following links on wiki finding out about allsorts of stuff I have no need to know about...

Usually I try to limit myself o two or three hours a day (I know that's loads, uck)

*sigh* I'm a complete nerd. First thing I do when I get out of bed, and I mean first thing, is switch on the PC and let it boot up. Toddle off for the morning pee, then sit down and open gmail for the usual flood of "Reply to X" emails from boards.ie that came in overnight. I browse thru these posts, reply to a few, then go off to do the daily morning rituals.

Into UCD, laptop on and log into gmail, MSN and UCD mail. Pretty much on those all day, responding to any mails or messages that come in. Spend a lot of time on boards, usually on ucd or comp forums.

And what do I do when I come home? Yep, up to the room and login back into desktop. So sad!

I can beat you irlrobins...even after a night out when I'm locked I still log into boards and post with interesting consequences!

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

    ha ha done that too

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,112 ✭✭✭Blowfish

I've a bad habit now of not logging off and going to bed at the 3am boards downtime. I just wander off to boards.jp or boards.us for half an hour then come back again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,755 ✭✭✭elmyra

There's a 3 am boards downtime? Man I'm clearly not as hardcore as the rest of you!

Yep, have been through it many a time, although tbh I'm rarely on boards before about 11 in the morning because I get up late.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭Scraggs

Oh blowfish I know what ya mean.. back in the good old days pre addiction the downtime was a signal for to go to sleep... now its just a bathroom break and a chance to stretch my legs and grab something to eat!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,112 ✭✭✭Blowfish

Yeah, though the posts get kindof boring after it, usually only AH is busy, plus the poker forum, which i'm never in anyway

    /stands up

Hi, my name is Sebastian, and I'm a boardsaholic.
At first it was just the odd post - interjecting here and there in conversations where there was blindingly obvious nonsense being perpetuated - and I thought I could handle it... But pretty soon I was posting in threads on subjects I knew less than nothing about - birdwatching, astrology, archaeology, honest-to-god-POLITICS for cryin' out loud - and suddenly I realised that I was addicted... When I logged onto boards one day, and realised that I knew all the users on the "most recent posts" page, I knew I was beyond help...

    That was 2 years ago.

Now? I connected to the site in ways I cannot explain, nor truthfully want to understand... If I were to be separated from the world of boards for any considerable amount of time, the consequences would be most dire.
