I tried the translators online but they give me incorrect answers
Basically I have to translate into German

    Q:What time is it?
    A:Wie vid Uhr ist es?

    How are you?
Wie geht as Ihmen (formal) Wie gehts as Ihmen (informal)

    Enjoy your Meal!
    guten Appietit!
What is your address? (formal/ informal)

    How do yo uspell that?
    Wie schreibt man das?

    Have a safe trip!
    Haben Sie einse sichere Reise!

    Where do you come from?(formal/informal)
    Woher kommst du?

    Have a nice weekend!
    Schones Wocherende

I think some of the ansers are correct but I want correct spelling ect.

Next thing is the same just in a resturant

Wiater , we would like to order?
    What are you having?
I'll have the soup and the roast pork with vegetables and potatoes?
I'll have the chicken with chips ?
    And to drink?
    A bottle of wine, please.
    Would you like dessert?
    Yes, apple pie with cream.
We would like to pay please.
    Together or separately?
    Keep the change!
    Thank you very much!

Sorry for being so long and I would apresheate it

yes, I want to be anal, it's my birthright :D:
I'll have the soup and the roast pork with vegetables and potatoes?"
"Ich moechte (Umlaut oe) die Suppe und das gebratene Schwein mit Gemuese (Umlaut ue) und Kartoffeln."

Correction: ich moechte die Suppe und den Schweinebraten (!) ...

(I don't think you want the whole hog, do you? :D )
    Keep the change!
    Behalten Sie das Wechselgeld!

    Correction:
    "Der Rest ist Trinkgeld"
(the version above sounds wrong somehow)
    Have a safe trip!
    Haben Sie eine gute/sichere Reise!(formal)
    Hab eine gute/sichere Reise! (infomal)

Correction: "Gute Reise" is all you need to say, really...Noone says "Haben Sie eine gute Reise..!
    What is your address?
Correct: Wie lautet Ihre Adresse? OR Wie ist Ihre Adresse?(formal) Wie lautet deine adresse? OR Wie ist deine Adresse?(informal)

You can also say: "Wo wohnst du"/ "wo wohnen Sie"

Erst schlagen wir England (im Elfmeterschiessen), und dann werden wir Weltmeister!

    Traeum weiter! :D

There's nothing wrong with this suggestion, but it seems overly fussy and non-real-world to me. "Stimmt so" (or "Passt scho'" or other local equivalent) is all I've really ever heard used in such a case.

"Stimmt so" is even better, you're right. may be a little colloquial though...

Fact is, I've never heard "Behalten Sie das Wechselgeld" anywhere...

Any more so, though, than "Wie geht's?" or any of the other natural conversational stuff that (I hope) gets taught in schools?

Yeah, it's extremely translated german. I'd use stimmt so.

    Enjoy your Meal!
I'd say 'Mahlzeit!' again it's just more common I guess.

    I'd disagree with this.

Mahlzeit is a midday greeting and would in my experience never be used past one in the afternoon and even then it's more like "enjoy your mealtime".

Also Mahlzeit is VERY regional and some of the Germans I know would NEVER use it.

It's also a very common greeting around the "mittagspause" with no sight nor sound of a meal at all.

An alternative to "guten appetit" would be:
"Lass es dir schmecken", this wouldn't normally be used in a formal context, that's to anyone you would "Sietz" and only people that you would "Dutz".

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,421 ✭✭✭Steveire

Yeah, you're absolutely right. I'd just encountered the word, and misread the meaning. I thought I'd remembered it from school days as meaning what I posted before, but thanks for clarifying that well.
    Keep the change!
    Behalten Sie das Wechselgeld!
This may be regional too for all I know, but payment transactions here dont go along the lines of:
    • Give waitress money
    • Recieve change, and hand her back some money
Instead, when you give the money you say how much you want the balance brought to.
So your beer costs two euro. You give her a fiver and say three. You get two back.
It's a change that takes a little getting used to.
