Just a few q's regarding Wimax.

I would like to set up a link between two sites that are 3 miles apart. There are no buildings in the path but there may be some trees. I can put an antenna pretty high up so LOS sould be pretty good however to cover myself and I was looking at Wimax as it doesnt need LOS? I have been looking on some sites and the gear is expensive but in this case will pay for itself in no time so I dont mind forking out. Anyone with any advice or recommendations?

    Thanks

    Hi there,

Is your link going to be point to point or Multi point?
To use WiMAX gear at the moment you need to get a 3.5Ghz licence from Comreg. The 5.8Ghz unlicensed spectrum WiMAX equipment will probably not available till the end of the year maybe even next year unfortunately.

What kind bandwidth will you be looking at?

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. It will be a point to point connection. I was unaware that the unlicensed equipment will not be available till 07. I wont be requiring a lot of bandwidth, current dsl speeds would be more than enough (~2mb)

I have been looking at sites mostly in the US, what do you think the equipment will retail for?

    Thanks

If you connection is only requires 2Mbit then you could go with a far more cheaper solution.

    Check the following sites out.
    http://www.mikrotik.com/ (complete kits and all)
    http://www.irishwireless.net/web/ (Radio's, antenna's, etc)
    http://www.wi-pipe.net/ (Good antennas)

the equipment from these site use 2.4Ghz or 5.8Ghz band.
it's far cheeper then going into wi-max plus i'd only look at wi-max if you want speeds up to 72Mbits!!

the 11b radios will give you about 5-6Mbits actual threw put at good signal
the 54g radios will give you about 25-32Mbits actual threw put at good signal.

Try http://www.aerial.net , they seem to be the cheaper for mikrotik boards/software , they also have pac-wireless antennas (using one atm works well) ,wi-pipe omnis are well decent tho..

For each end you would need something like this ...
    http://www.aerial.net/shop/product_info.php?cPath=33&products_id=230
    http://www.aerial.net/shop/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=34
    plus a decent PSU
plus a "pigtail" to go between the tiny connector on the radiocard and the antenna.
as far as antennas go you can get antennas with pouches for the electronics but if you're going for a higher gain antenna ,you will need to get yourself a good quality outdoor enclosure.

have a look here to see roughly what it should look like: http://www.irishwan.ie/wiki//index.php/Hardware:Installing_a_WRAP

note:The above guide is slightly out of date , Routerboards have been released, which have the OS on board and are ready to go meaning you can ignore Staros ( best thing to do with it anyway  )

You're not supposed to use g-mode outdoors however 2 of the above boards on 5.8 will give you ~ 20Mbit (tested last week with ftp traffic over a few miles)

If aerial.net are out of stock or you need (free !) advice stick a post on http://www.irishwan.com
    or IRC chat on
