Abuse victims campaigner Colm O'Gorman has announced he is to run for the PD's in Co.Wexford. The PD's last stood in Wexford in 1989, getting 1.1% of the vote, compared to 5% before that. There doesn't seem to be much of a PD organisation in Wexford. I think they only had 1 PD candidate in the locals there.

Seems that Harney's talk of high-profile candidates wasn't an idle boast. A few more and maybe the PD's talk of increasing their seats won't be such an outlandish prospect. Or will it?

So is Colm in with a shot in Wexford? Would high-profile candidates sway your vote? I am thinking of voting PD because I'm a gr8 fan of McDowell.

Michael McDowell is cool yeh. I think Gorman will get a good vote because I think he's high-profile and is well-respected (though I'm not a fan)

I'm not sure I'd like to see any more PD representation in Dail Eireann. They make a lot of noise but haven't done much over the last few years. They have lost their way since O'Malley stepped aside. Pat Cox might have made something of them.

Would the PD' be starting to be integrated back into fianna fail?I know that the person running the YPD'S in NUIG is a Fianna Fail member!

I am glad to see more diverse candidates running in Wexford! Up until the last election all of the parties have had the same proportion of TD's since the early 80's!

I doubt this will end up like the debacle involving the Green candidiate at the lst general elections! I my consider giving my vote to the PD's!

PDs came from several parties. Michael McDowell was once tipped as taoiseach for fine gael.

It may be happening, but I don't think that with the PD's back in the fold, FF would be able to command an overall majority. That's the only reason integration would be attractive to FF. They can get on very well without PDs. They have an alternative - maybe two now - coalition partner(s).

LOL. Thank god that never happened!

Another good stunt by the PD'S sure they will
love to have him they wnt seats.

Just becuase a man was abused doesnt
mean he will get elected well he shouldnt
be he knows nothing about politics.

    well he shouldnt
be he knows nothing about politics.
What are you basing that on?

Just because he was abused should get into
    goverment

    Eh?

I dont know what that has to do with anything.I doubt he or anyone else is expecting a quota of votes from sympathy over his abuse.

Anyway I was asking you where you got the notion that he knows nothing about politics.

Could you expand on that please.

hmmmmmmm. the pd's have done nothing much in this country? how utterly unbelievable. I presume there are some socialist do nothing and expect somethings on this thread - how awful. Colm O'Gorman is a good addition to the only party in this god forsaken country which stands for those, ahem, who want to make some money for a living. Not sitting, waiting for a social welfare pay check. If (god forbid) labour or fine gael get in, i'm outta this country. I won't even turn the lights off.......

The lights are on, but no one's home.

A vote for labour means one less PD loving southsider in the country?
Never thought i'd say it but I might have to vote labour. :p

That is so condescending. He would not get in on sympathy alone. As I said above, I am not a fan but he is erudite and clever and has had to bargain with politicians for years through his work. I'd say he knows politics pretty well by now.

    That is extremly condescending

    1. He comes from a politcal background - his father was in FF
    2. He has campaigned and advocated on behalf of people

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Not only was it condesending, it was an ignorant post full stop...It's little wonder the poster hasnt came back to defend it.

O Gormans Father was a co councillor as far as I know.

I live close to the Wexford constituency,it used be very predictable but theres been a huge influx into it in recent years especially in North Wexford. Gorey is supposed to be one of the fastest growing towns in Ireland and the villages around it.
I'd expect Howlin to get back in and the 2 FG candidates but FF will be under pressure to hold a 2nd seat there-so thats up for grabs and I think it might be a three way tussle between O Gorman, Dwyer of SF and an FF candidate.

I would not be so sure about that! The last time out FF were gunning for 3 seats and only missed out because of the unexpected support for independent Liam Twomey, although he has now joined Fine Gael so I wonder how this will affect his popularity! Here are the figures for the last election which show an overall majority for Fianna Fail candidates http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wexford_(constituency)

Although it is interesting that you mention Gorey as although there are 5 TD's in the constituency none are from the Gorey area! In fact that was the reason that Michael D'Arcy ever got elected!

I am just hoping Sinn Fein do not get a seat in Wexford, although they seem to be gaining in popularity!

I am from north wexford were he is expecting to get most of his votes. simply he has been objecting to locals who are building in the area, so I dont think he reallly has any chance. wexford does not have much room for outside canidates. save the last election its usually a straight forward 2FG 2FF and 1 labour

Its simply an unknown how he would do in my opinion but if there is to be a change in that constituency,I'd imagine FF will be the one to lose out.
You must remember that there was a tide towards FF and independents at the last election, there are rather different dynamics currently.

I would have thought that the Liam Twomey vote would be the best bet to get a seat here. He ran as an Independent and then joined FG. A cynical act if ever I saw one.

He should have gone with FG, would love to be a fly on the wall when he finds out what McDowell has been covering up.

So after years of fighting the Government, particularly in recent years when 1in4 nearly had to close due to lack of funding, he chooses to run for one of those parties

He was terrible on the Sunday Supplement, sounded every bit the politician - avoiding the question, speaking mistruths, misquoting. Those that were members of his organisation and saw him as their champion must feel sold out right now, and frankly who could blame them?
