Here is a press release on the new broadband network in the Lough Graney area of East Clare for any who might have missed it in the local papers.

    Joe :D

Lough Graney Community Broadband (LGCB) Goes Live

After 18 months of hard work the steering committee of the LGCB are very pleased to announce that broadband connectivity in East Clare is now 'live'. This means that households and businesses in the Lough Graney area can now get fast broadband connection at up to 40 times the speed of using phone lines to connect to the internet. The project received generous grant aid from Leader.

Three antennae, similar to a television aerial, have been installed in strategic locations so that as many of the community as possible can connect. As long as a subscriber can see one of these aerials then it is possible to get connected.

Joe Griffin, a University of Limerick lecturer and local resident, initially proposed the idea to the local community in 2004. Joe said "The technology to use wireless connection has been around for some years but has dramatically reduced in price over the past two years. This has meant that it is now cost effective to connect a rural community such as that in Killanena/Caher/Flagmount to the internet without having to wait for the large phone companies to provide the infrastructure. But the project would not have happened without the hard work of our voluntary committee and the support of Leader who have generously funded this project. This project demonstrates that local communities can implement change without waiting for others to do it for them. From the beginning of May we are connecting subscribers at a special introductory rate."

The technical aspects of the project have been implemented by a Killaloe based company, Fast Wireless Internet (www.fwi.ie) who have also installed similar wireless connectivity in Scarriff, Killaloe, Mountshannon, Ballina, Lorrha near Portumna and along the shores of Lough Derg in Clare and Tipperary.

The Lough Graney project enables anybody living within view of Lough Graney to connect immediately, and for those in surrounding townlands in the locality, most can be connected but a site survey would be carried out free of charge first. Over 30 local people have already signed up from Killenana to Kilclaran and from Liss to Knockbeha. If others are interested then please contact Joe on 061 925232 or Maureen Moroney on 061 925937.
