Nasty burning smell when I'm in traffic and it seems to be slipping when I'm taking off in 1st gear. I need to rev the car a bit more than normal to get it moving off smoothly as well.

So, assuming that my own diagnosis of this is correct I'm just wondering how much a new clutch would cost to buy and fit as I've never needed to do this before. The car is a 1993 3 series BMW if that makes a difference...

    I'd guess around e400.

Sounds like a clutch slipping alright. A good test is to turn the engine on, pull up the handbrake, put the car into 3rd gear and try to pull off. If the engine doesn't cut out then it's a good sign the clutch is kaput.
