Bank Draft Question

I opened an AIB student account when I became a student. The main reason I went with them was because my mam's been with them since the 70's...and they gave me free phone credit or something equally enticing...

I've got bank drafts from them before for buying stuff online etc. The €1.90 charge is waived for students. As a result of this, I've got a few bank drafts for the parents over the years also.

In the past I've paid with cash. Today however was different. I was in getting a bank draft to pay the mortgage. The teller told me I'd have to lodge the money into my account before I could get the bank draft as he "couldn't accept cash". So...I handed the cash over, he lodged it, then took it out again for the bank draft.

Is it just me, or was that a very unnecessary step? Was it done just so transaction fees could be charged to me or something? It's almost as ridiculous their policy of not giving you a bank draft if you don't have an account (like my dad, who's never had a bank account anywhere).

It's to help make money laundering more difficult. Previously one could exchange large amounts of money for a draft - now it has to go through your account so there is a paper trail. (I think!!)
