After readin pburns' Peugeot thread I thought it'd be an idea to see which companies you think have the most similar models in their own ranges and which don't

Personally I find it difficult to tell Audi's apart from a distance

    A4 or A6????

    A6 or A8????

The Jetta and Passat are also fairly though not totally unanimous at the rear

I found the previous model A4 and A6 were closer looking than the new ones.

I have great trouble distinguishing the Maybach 57 from the Maybach 62. :D

I think the first large scale corporate nose-ry was done by Ford, when it gave us "new edge" styling in the late 90's. The Ka, Cougar, Puma, and Focus were instantly recognisable by their triangular bits!

All Porsches pretty much look the same. apart from the hideous Cayenne

Toyota are starting to adopt similar styling cues across their new range, but it's fairly subtle. The Japanese cars don't seem to go for Corporate noses as much as the europeans.

Land Rover are starting to make all their machines look like the Range Rover. It started with (obviously enough) the Range Rover, then they facelifted the ageing Discovery II with similar headlights. Then the new Disco came out with loads of styling cues. Now the Freelander is going to look like a scaled down Range Rover.

Peugeot seem to be the worst offender, along with Renault and Citroen.
Alfa Romeo do it as well, but they have a fairly small range, which are good looking, so that's OK

If it wasn't for the utterly bland Almera, Nissans would win I think for having very different looking cars (not the same thing as pretty though!).

They did an oval grille phase before that.

The 4dr focus now looks like a mondeo that shrunk a little.

Face on, the Mazda 3 & 6 are quite similar.

I find it a wee bit disturbing that cars from Different manufacturers are quite indistinguishable.

The Pug 107, Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo.

    Previously there was the:
Bubble Mazda 121 and something else?
Then there was a Mazda and a Ford escort that were the same.
The Nissan Maverick and the Ford Terrano.. (alot of Fords here!?)

there was others, but I can't think of them at the moment.

A few years back the old Ford Fiesta and a small Mazda were almost identical except for the Badge, (I reckon they were built in the same factory)

Both the old Fiesta and Mazda 121 were the same car built in a Ford factory.

The Nissan Terrano and Ford Maverick MkI were also the same car, the Mazda Tribute and Ford Maverick MkII were also based on the same vehicle.

    Others that are similar:

    Peug 106 and Citroen Savo
Peug 107, Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo

Most Nissan, Renault and Opel pannel vans are the same vehicle these days. Same goes with Peug, Citroen and Fiat pannel vans.

Also the current Avensis and Vectra seem very similar.

And Peug 307 and old Honda Civic 5dr.

Must say I disagree with the Aygo, C1, 107. Find it very easy to tell them apart head on.

    Very distinct.

The side profile is the same though. Not surprising consideringthey are the same car

    you take that back!

    or explain how they're similar!

How about that holy of holies - BMW? Take away the badge, kidney grille and 4 lamps and it could be ANYTHING, a Nissan, a Honda, a Hyundai. Put the badge back on you kablamo - that'll be €40000 for a underpowered, underspecced ugly POS that wouldn't pull a soldier off yer sister. Ah but it looks like an M5 at the front. The most cynically marketed cars ever.

    Ditto Mercedes.

I disagree about Ford's new edge styling - the cars were immediately identifiable as Fords but did not look identical.

Of course to find how it really should be done we need look no further than my beloved Citroën in the early 70s. 2cv, Ami8, GS and DS. 4 completely different cars, each immediately recognisable as a Citroën .

I have got to say that the styling of the old Avensis and the last version of the BMW 3 Series 2002 version IIRC were very similar, You would really notice it on the front but the Rears of both vehicles look very similar when seen from only a small bit back.

Since colm_mcm has taken on the vectra V avensis, ill save the aygo from the c1 107

They aygo's front is completly different. The aygo doesent have a big black plastic grin on its face.

Now the passat ang jetta are the same car minus a few milimeters, the jetta is like the very well feed runt of a litter

OOOps, didnt mean to step on any toes there :)

I am not saying they are the same car, but that they look very similar.

    IMO...

Sorry, I can't see it. The Vectra has lots of angles and straight lines. has pronounced wheelarches, whereas the Avensis is fairly rounded, with no sharp lines at all.

Also re: Aygo/C1/107 having a corporate nose: They are the exact opposite. Corporate noses are used to make a number of cars look the same. The Aygo/C1/107 takes 1 car, and gives it three different identities!
