Meeting people in Dublin

Apologies if this isn't the right sort of thing to ask here, but... basically, what's the best way to meet new people here in Dublin, online or off (that doesn't involve pubs or clubs)?

I'm an expat American that's been living here with my partner for a few months now - and while I love him to bits and enjoy the company of his family and friends, I've been profoundly missing all of mine back in the US, and would love to make some new friends here in Dublin. Trouble is, I don't really know Dublin that well yet (for various reasons, we don't/can't get out much together) and I don't know where and how to meet people here... the fact that I'm a painfully shy (semi-agoraphobic) guy who tends to be far more comfortable online than off doesn't help much, either. (Pubs and clubs are very much *not* my style.) But I'd like to face that fear and meet some nice, reasonably mature folks... so, well, where should a guy like me go?

    Thanks so much...

I'm sure there's some kind of community that would have the same interests as you! Check newspapers, maybe check the noticeboard of a local church.

    Hope you get on ok!

Edit: Just noticed you're a photographer, perhaps pop down to the Photo Gallery in Temple bar and see if there's any photographic societies about.
