long time listener to newstalk, and have contributed to the show on lots of ocassions, using mainly text, which was charged at a normal rate.

now they have a 30c premium charge, to text into their show!

this is ridiculus, isn't it enough that they have a v good listenership, who bother to add to the debate.

    complete rip off.

They have their text service based with Meteor, the now Eircom subsidiary. Meteor has an arrangement whereby termination charges for all services from other networks (including texts) are considerably higher than they are for the likes of Vodafone/o2/3 etc.

This was originally to ensure Meteor's viability- given its current status it is clearly indefensible.

Comreg was granted new powers last week, hopefully the Meteor rip-off for off-network interactions will be high on its to-do list.......

heard this alright this morning on the dunphy show. complete profiteering on people participating in the program. I'm sure if they could get a cut off the price of a stamp or money for an email they would do it too. Bad move by the management, if not fecking Youra ****e star type where those people deserve to be ripped off its ripping off your audience.
In fairness to Dunphy he did say he was totally against it and to email instead.

/edit just after reading smccarrick's post.
dont think that is enough to justify the sudden move to premium messages seeing as the service has been free up to now even though Meteor had higher termination charges. They always used to say you can text in to them "thanks to meteor" so meteor might have provided them with the service for free up to now. An also seeing as they are on the termination side and not originating any messages, there is no valid reason for premium charges to people sending messages other than profit by newstalk.
