    Hey all,

I had a crash recently. Male, 20, full license.....not a boy racer, had a genuine accident, wasn't speeding, sun blinded me, hit gravel, got into a skid, hit a wall...anyway........

I'm going to ring around the insurance companies tomorrow looking for quotes. I can imagine that it's going to be hard after making a claim and the fact that I'm a 20 year old male won't help either.

Could anyone recommend an insurance company that won't go too heavy on me??

How much did you claim for, you may been better off just getting a loan from the CU, you're only going to pay it back in premiums anyway.

The car was an economical write off, the car was worth 24k but I think the claim worked out at 12k

You're pretty much screwed no matter who you go to. €12k is a fair whack. I'm surprised you only got half of what you though the car was worth - had you added on a whole pile of stuff; Bodykits, resprays, etc?

Most people will say that you're better off sticking with your current insurer, but you may as well ring around. Afaik, there's a place in town (was mentioned in another recent thread) that specialises in high-risk drivers (recently crashes, banned, etc).

    Hi seamus,

The car was only 2 months old so we got a new car under hibernians new for old scheme. The damage done to the car was just over half the value of the car.

I was on my mum's insurance as a named driver. I have since got my hands on a fiesta so I'm no longer on my mum's insurance and I'm looking for insurance of my own.....do you happen to know what thread the "high-risk" insurance company was mentioned in??

If I remember correctly, it was simply a box you tick when getting a quote from Hib... "Have you had any claims in the past 3 years" ... simple yes or no. Just try it first and then wory about it, you might be working yourself up for something that might not be all that bad

But you haven't had the claim - the policy holder has made the claim!? Are you not a named driver?

    Are ya talkin to me?

With my case. I was driving my own car, own policy. Some eejit driving on the wrong side of the road crashes into me. He accepts liability and pays for everything.

I rang my insurance to let them know... All is fine. I go to make renewal and im told that theres an 'unresolved case'. I explained to them that the other party accepted liability and that everything was sorted.

    Done

    To The OP:

That claim is on your Mams policy, and will affect her premium, not yours.
It is thick, but that is the way it is. My wife recently damaged my car, but it is in my name, her renewal on her car will not be affected, but mine will, even though I was in bed with a hangover when the accident happened...
(actually it wont as I have no claims protection, but you get the idea.)

    Hey,

Yes, I was a named driver.

So when insurance companies ask me "Have you made a claim\been involved in an accident in the last 3 years" do I just say No??

Yes as it wasnt your policy

    Are ye 100% positive?

If I was to have an accident again and the insurance company found out that I had an accident before that I didn't tell them about, could they say that I didn't disclose all the material facts?? Which I'm guessing would make my policy void!

On insuarnce companies website it says under Assumptions when getting a quote:

"You and any person driving under this policy have never been disqualified from driving and have not been involved in any accident/loss or have had any claims made against you/them in the last 3 years."

Why don't you ring up and find out?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,073 ✭✭✭jamieh

I've gotten several quotes today, but I told the companies that I had a crash recently....should I ring them again and this time tell them I never had an accident??

You have to mention it when asked - I was in the same position.

YOU made the claim as YOU had the accident. Just because it was on someone elses policy is irrelevant.

Who quoted you? I found Quinn Direct were the only crowd that were in any way reasonable.

If you dont mention it, your insurance will be null and void.
