Engine seal

The head gasket was done on my 1996 316i about 6 months ago and the engine is mostly fine except the engine seal wasn't done right and it leaks a bit of oil onto the ground. Is it expensive to fix this? Is it worth bothering? Would they fail you in the NCT for this? Is there a sealing material/spray that can be used?

Aside from this, the engine sounds like it's clacking lately like a jallopy and squeeling like a pig too. It overheated last night and the mechanic this morning said that the fan was hitting the plastic cowling and then got stuck and stopped going around. Is this the cause of the noises or is it from the engine seal break?

    Thanks

The oil is probably leaking from the cam cover, is it from the cover to the top of the engine, or the head gasket, about 1/3 of the way down. The squeeling would be from the fan sliping and clipping that plastic cowl!

Cheers for that. The oil is leaking from the seal about half way up the engine block.

Sounds like you were right, head gasket is fecked again, so check for the usual symptoms, mayo in the oil cap, scum in the coolant, smell of antifreeze of the exhaust. It could be just the early stages, but it something that needs mechanical attention. Alternativly, the head could just require re-torquing, althought this is doubtful.
