Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can anyone recommend a decent eye mascara?, also any tips on how to put it on well. I find it tricky which is partly down to lack of practice. What do people think of eye liner?, any tips on putting that on would help. I think it can look nice but I am absolutely dire at putting it on.

    Thanks.

Practise makes perfect really....I always wear waterproof mascara and eyeliner cos that means you wont end up with panda eyes.I always use lancome cos I find them the best.

I have blue eyes and I usually opt for brown eyeliner and brown mascara cos it looks the most naturall. I only use pencil eyeliner as I cant use the liquid one....pencil ones can be easlly smudged for asmoky effect as well which I like!

In relation to you're "what do people think of" question. Yup, eye make up is good:D pretty much the only make up I actually like.

I can't use liquid either - pencil ftw. If it looks a bit wonky, put eyeshadow over it and blend it in.

As for mascara, practise makes perfect I guess. I look in the mirror and be careful not to go too near they surface of the eye. Also, I kinda "blot" it with tissue and avoid blinking til it dries so as not to get it on my skin. The Maybelline ones seem to be pretty good and are fairly cheap.

I've fair lashes and find that most mascara tubes give me too much mascara. I usuall grab a sheet of tissue and wipe off about half of the mascara from the wand. I then apply as many coats as I want. 1 for day maybe 2 at night. I don't normally wear black as I find it too strong, plum/wine colours are more normal for me.

As to eyeliner, I use a small chisel brush and eyeshadow. Just load the tip of the brush with shadow and then press it into the roots of the lashes. This way, I find it very easy to put on light eyeliner during the day and be quickly able to load it up for night.

I don't like pencil and liquid eyeliners, as I find that they drag at the skin, causing it to fold, meaning that the eyeliner goes on wonky.

The trick with mascara is to layer a few coats & don't overload the brush. Comb the wand right through from root to tip but kinda wiggle the brush as the root. It depends on your eyelashes, but mine are naturally curly so I just put it on normally i.e put the wand under my top lashes looking straight on in the mirror. Some people look down into a mirror and apply on top of the lashes.

If you are going to put mascara on your bottom lashes, apply that before you do your top lashes.

I used pencil eyeliner. A nice touch is to put black on the top inside lid, it defines your eyelashes and makes them look darker. However practice this as it is not for everyone.... I have gotten my fair share of weird looks when I do it.:)

If pencil & liquid liner are not for you, get a nice firm slanted brush and either wet some brown/black eyeshadow to line the upper eye are you can buy liner in little tubs in places like mac/Bobbi Brown.

Maybeline is fine as a mascara, does what it says on the tin.:)

Thanks girls (sorry if a contributor is male)

I have maybeline mascara with the curved wand. I already take the ecxess off the wand and dab a bit off the lases with a tissue if I think there is too much. At the moment I am using black mascara, I have light rich brown hair and blue eyes and pale skin. Is black a bit much or would another colour be better.

Well, I have blue eyes and fair skin too and I use black. It's said people of my colouring shouldn't use black but I like it!

Also, another tip: put on eye cream under your eyes before applying mascara - it'll be easier to wipe it off if some gets on your skin.

With regards the mascara, I'd highly recommend Dior Maximeyes. Available in a broad spectrum of colours and when applied correctly, can produce stunning effects. Costs €25 and is available from all department store cosmetic halls.

Alternatively, if you're on a little bit of a budget, Max Factor 2000 Calorie Lash mascara is wonderful. I bought this last week and can't see much difference between this and my Dior one. Costs €9.65 and is stocked in many pharmacies and supermarkets.

Eyeliner- Barbara Daly's range called "Makeup" for Tesco makes a fabulous pencil eyeliner. Smooth, doesn't crumble and the colours are very good. Costs €5 to €6. MAC eyeliner is also wonderful, as there are so many colours available and the pencil is very long, so it lasts for a good while. Invest in a good lakep pencil sharpener.

When applying mascara, place the brush as close to the lash line as possible, and as you are pulling the brush forward towards your lash tips to coat them, roll the brush. Ensures maximum coverage and even distribution of the mascara. Do 2 coats with this method. Also, another great way is to zig zag the brush back and forth while applying- seperates lashes and provides almost a fan effect.

BEND your mascara brush, so the brush part is at an angle coming away from the wand. Stops smudging and is easier to apply when your brush is like this.

Hope I was of some help!

The Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara is really brilliant I would definately second that, the best i've used

Can't go wrong with Dior's backstage mascara, its what I've always found best anyways.

Some really good advice there about putting on mascara and eyeliner. It is all about practise!!

Best way I find putting on Mascara is to hold a mirror at my chin and look down so you can coat the top of the lashes and then go under to coat the underneath and bring the lashes back up. Doin all that wiggling the bent brush all helps to get it right into the lashes for the best effect.

I've used quite a few mascaras and to be honest I find the cheaper brands much better!! The Max Factor 2000 calories is a great. Maybelline can cause reactions to some peoples eyes so if you're any way sensitive I'd avoid. I've used Dior Show but I find the brush too big and YSL false effect is good but dries up very quickly and I find the Lancome ones are too clumpy. You should throw out your mascara after 3 months of buying- bacteria and all that.

For eyeliner - there are so many different types you can choose from, all which give different looks. First off always put a base shadow on your eyes, even if you don't want to wear eyeshadow. Use a neutral tone eyeshadow all over the eyelid (or if you're stuck some translucent powder). This will take away any oil on your lids. (the oil causes the liner to move, smudge etc). Then apply away!!

Liquid/ Gel /creme liners with give a dramatic look to the eyes. These are good if you want to make a statement so better used if you are good at putting it on. If you do make a mistake, take a cotton bud soaked in makeup remover and use to get rid of the mistake. Mac do Fluidlines which are gel liners that once dried are waterproof and come in lots of colours. They've new liners out called Liquid Last Liners and these dudes do not nudge once they are dry!!! Lancome also do nice liquid liners. I find using an angled brush is the easiest to apply. But you could also use a flat or pointed liner brush.

Pencils give you a nice line with a slightly softer look to the liquid liners. Most people find these easier to put on. Make sure the pencil is sharp to get a nice line. So get a proper eye pencil sharpener not one you use on your HB pencils!!! Like one of the posters said, you can put pencil liner in the rim of the top lid to make it look like you've fuller lashes but it is quite tricky and I don't bother myself. I always start at the centre of the lid to get the right thickness of the line and then line the inner part and out part of the lid. The more you go in with the liner the smaller your eyes will get. And if you have small eyes I'd try to avoid putting any dark liner in the rim of your bottom lid. To get a smokey look, smudge the liner with a pencil brush or cotton bud.

For an even softer look and nicer for day time wear if to use eyeshadow as a liner. It gives a much softer look and particularly nice on mature people. Using an angled brush just dip some into the eyeshadow (you don't have to wet it with most shadows, and wetting some eyeshadows ruins them!!) and apply close to the lash line.

If you aren't good at drawing the line, take the brush with shadow/gel liner on it and press on lid, get more shadow and move along the lid and press down again. keep doing this till you've cover the whole lash line. The brush does the work for you and you get a nice line that isn't all over the place. An angled or flat liner brush is used for this.

Also eyelash curlers are a g ood investment if you want the WOW effect to your lashes. MAC do good ones but I've heard the ones that Shu Mera (can't spell) are the best!
