Shercock, Cavan--Internet Access

I am on a dial up connection via isp eircom.net thru the Shercock exchange and am located about 5 miles from the town.
My speed, over the last few months, has dropped from 28.8kbps to a pathetic 16.8kbps. I have spoken, to a number of people in eircom, about the problem but have just got a good run around.
I would be interested to know what speed others in this area are getting, or if they are encountering problems.
I don't suppose that there is a good wireless system operating here, as I would dearly love to tell eircom what to do with both their landline and internet access.

Hi wolfe, I am on the same exchange and I am roughly two and a half miles from the exchange in the town. I had the same problems when I was on dailup. The speeds were absolutely pathetic and really not worth the bother. I recently got eircom broadband which has kept me content, but the speed is still nowhere near what it should be for broadband.

Would you consider broadband from any of the providers around the area? I'm not sure if there are many, but I hope for your sake that it isn't eircom broadband. They are truely pathetic.

    Best of luck.

    Thanks for reply.
I'd go for broadband if I could get it. The exchange has recently upgraded to broadband, but when I checked, my line is still not suitable, so I'm stuck until whenever.
I've been following the moans and groans in the broadband forum, but was just looking here for a bit of local experience.

Email phil.nolan@eircom.ie and tell him that eircom are not providing you with Functional Internet Access as per what Comreg have set, at 28.8 kbps. He is the CEO of eircom. Distance should not be too big an issue as my line is a full 4 miles long and I can connect at 50.6 kbps.

Am I right in saying that your phone number is 0429669***?

Distance was one factor that was mentioned, the other was possible noise on line, although I can't hear any.
    No, the number is 0429691***

Ohh right, that would also be a Shercock number.

Try the email route anyway. You would be suprised at the successes people have had over the years through this approach.

For your speed to drop like that, I would say there was a fault on the line or something. One can't be too sure. But sending an email will get them to come back to you about the problem and get them to do something about it.

When eircom mentions a number of factors for a problem, they are very likely talking through their asses. It sounds like a standard response to a query they have heard many times, given the current state of rural wiring in places.

    To be confirmed
I'll follow up your email suggestion but just wanted to check that there's no in- house problem first, like the one suggested by Poblachtach.
I agree, the wiring in places is a disgrace. Driving along the Carrick/Dundalk near Essexford, the other day, I see that the poles at places have collapsed and the wires are either supported by tree branches or just lying in the ditch. It's amazing that the system works atall.

I have pointed out to eircom in the past of the condition of wiring in the Carrick' area. I don't know why the problem is so bad in that area.

You can check to see of wiring is the problem by plugging out all secondary sockets and phones and just using the master socket for internet access.

If that doesn't work you can ring eircom on 1901 and ask them to come out to fix up your sockets. They will charge you roughly €50 odd for this. You can find out the exact price by ringing them.

But I think it's a better idea to send the email should the first option not work as you wouldn't want to waste €50 on internal wiring that may not be faulty.

Given Mullagh's location and pretty small size, eircom are not interested in enabling the exchange. They are looking for Govt. money to enable all of these exchanges.

Now, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that one or two more exchanges may be enabled but as far as eircom's concerned, they have substantially completed their upgrade programme and that will be that for this year and the next year too most likely, unless the Govt. steps in.

Mullagh is part of the Kells area so that means numbers in the general area would be 04692***** I think. Virginia is in a different area code.

Use the email address I provided earlier, you will get a fairly prompt answer. Although you might have to send it 2 or 3 times for them to notice.

I'm not sure that email address is of any use to you as Phil Nolan is about to, or has already left eircom.

Someone emailed the lobby group Ireland Offline in April to say that they passed for broadband after they emailed Pat Kenny's show. Eircom had a man on it 3 or 4 months back and AFAIK any emails from unhappy customers were sent straight to eircom.

This particular customer was contacted by eircom, who then quickly found out the issue with the line and remedied it in a month.

Hi, just came across this thread and was wondering if the broadband speeds have improved over the years in the Shercock area?

I live in Shercock, Carrick road, Eircom say I can get 7MB broadband, but I have no land line, I have looked about getting mobile broadband, have tried 3 & Vodafone, 3 works fine outside but move inside and you have no signal, vodafone will work inside but very slow, 02 say they will have no coverage no 3G mast in the area.
