Linksys Wireless router no longer communicating with NTL modem

    Hi All,

I have had a Linksys wireless router connected to a NTL cable modem for the last year without problems, However today I found my internet connection down. At first I thought NTL's internet connection was down, but I connected the computer directly to the NTL modem and it worked. I then tried reseting the wireless router and reconnecting it to the NTL modem but that didn't resolve it. I have checked both network cables involved in the setup and they are working. It just doesn't seem to be connecting with the cable modem anymore.

I can get on to the wireless routers setup page and it seems to be working fine. Also there is an light on it to indicate a connection to the internet and that comes on when I connect it to the cable modem.

Any Suggestions will be greatly recieved.

    Thanks

Make sure you have the latest firmaware for the linksys.

I have also heard tales of them overheating. Try leaving it off for a hour , and then see if it connects.

Finally if your still not connecting, do a factor reset.

At least doing the above will eliminate some possible causes of the problem.

    Hey whatstherush.

Will you do the following for me so I/We can see where the prob might lie. Setup your system as normal. (Modem->linksys router->PC)

    1) Open a command prompt. (Start->run->cmd). Type ipconfig /all and post the output here.

    2) ping the ip address of the Default Gateway listed from the ipconfig output above (i.e. ping 192.168.1.1). Post results here.

    3) ping 66.249.93.99. Post results here.

    4) ping www.google.ie. Post results here.

Do you know what the ip address of your cable modem is?

3:The other 2 pings timed out. Also pinging the ntl modem (192.168.100.1) is timing out as well. I have also tried the factory reset but that didn't work.

    Thanks

That all looks ok setting wise. Basically it is as you say, you can get to router but not beyond it. And it's not a dns issue cos pinging an ip address failed as well.

Mmmm... leave it with me for a bit.

Wonder if the bridge is causing problems.

Remove your Network Card from the MAC Bridge Miniport by doing this:

    * Click on Start..Control Panel and then on Network Connections
    * Right-click on your Local Area Connection and choose Remove from Bridge
    * Right-click Network Bridge and choose the Disable option

Did you check your cables? Maybe the router -> modem one is dodgy.

Ive had similar trouble the last couple of mornings with NTL. Something seems to go awry late at night. Basically what Ive been doing is resetting the Modem (plug it out for 30 seconds) and then doing the same with the Linksys router (about 60 seconds). Plug it all back in, restart the browser and hey presto, its back up.

Try setting the DNS servers in the Router to

    194.168.4.100

    194.168.8.100

    and then try the pings
