Alvar Hanso had good intentions when he began his work to aid mankind but his munitions and defense background has caught up with along with most dubious looking board of directors you've ever seen
it was in the begining a kinda big brother experiment with bells on - circa 1980 - ( the aim of which was an elaborate attempt to create a society capable of sustaining existance after a possible catclysmic event) , along with the usual hanso experiments of electromagnetism etc (in a project to understand ever present em fields hanso sets a massive em field covering an entire island - this is wire sayid finds, the island is circled by wires,(also this could explain the 'god can't see us phrase' the em field shielding them from radars etc)
At some stage dharma started to break away, alvar hanso overthrown (hence the doctored date on his photograph), now they (hanso org) have the w.h.o in their pocket they can develop lethal strain s of viruses and sell on the antidotes/drugs through their secret affilate widmore corp(remeber the preg test (planted on flight 815 as part of the game, dahrma studying juxtapositional eugenics predicted the need for this) linking them to being a pharmaceutical company, so the hanso org builds hospitals in africa so it can sell these vital medicines on to the various african and surrounding governments.
I suppose a horrible scenario see the gigantic hanso org and affiliates holding the world at ransom, a lethal global pandemic that only they can cure.

But a breakaway fraction of Dhrma seem to be subverting the Hanso org with their secret website, existing undernath hansos own website, will the losties like Jack and Locke and Sayid becomes persephone/alex/kate latest accomplices?

Island games
so the 'others' as we know them (anna refers to them as animals) are just guinea pigs/lab rats like the losties but they've experienced much more severe drugging/experimentation, (this is why they're animals/like the controlled dog michael has become, notice he was protecting henry more anything else) and the fake disguises we've seen are
not to fool the losties but this group of 'other', it's a way for the dharma scientists (once test subjects themselves, this explains the missing limbs scenario where they were made take part in cell regeneration experiments before graduating to doctors/scientits etc) to walk amoung them unnoticed and keep them loyal and controlled to 'him'.
They bring their subject possibly in plane s to the island and then the electromagnetic sphere that has been set up rips apart the vehicle to each extreme end, the + and - i.e each side of the island, while the em fields integrated remote viewing interaction center(aka 'smokey) oversees our crash survivors, btw those who live but who weren't central to the experiment are deemed variables...those who were central to the experiment were organised back in the real world by the military in the case of sawyer, sayid, kate, or by family in the case of jack, claire(maybe charlie currently replenishing his soul by helping to build the church), or by faith like locke and eko.(all these prominent experimental figures having been given more benifical crash seats to begin with thus improving their survival chance) these chosen ones must prove themselves worthy members loyal subjects of dharma or face death in any number of horrible ways including death by ranch dressing in hurleys case, or death by boredom in the case of locking someone in the supply room with jack...

The 'numbers' project:
The central hanso figure 'hurely' has been purposefully given the numbers, the valenzetti equation, through lenny the nut in the hanso owned mental institute, former place of residence of libby( a reformed mental pateinet turned professional psychologist in another Dharma project, libby travels on the plane with the losties as the losties psychoanalytical advisor) and of course, lockes mother, Locke an original Aaron, who due to the project being postponed never made it as a Dharma subject, this is why locke has this overwhelming sense of meaning thats due in his life) these numbers contain a mathamticlal anoamly or divinity (possibly governed by the belief in them by their collective users) that the scientists wish to track by stranding him desert bound on a scientifically contained and monitored
island (if the numbers doomsday prophecy is correct then dharma s utopia awaits,), dave (a hanso based employee) attempts to get hurley to kill himself when they fear the numbers have become too uncontrolable and the society is not ready (again), libby in an attempt to keep the experiment going feigns a romantic interest in hugo, suggesting she has moved from the ranks of the hanso org to the free radical ideas of new dharma, now if someone would be kind enough to tell me what the hell walt is exactly i would be happy!

Childern
Clearly childern are taken early to ensure their complicity in the D.I, but in the case of Walt things are different, it would seem that walt is another Dharma project returning from real world experience with his island eye, Vincent the evil rain dog (there seems to be a complete wheather system on the island ala Truman). In the case of Aaron and the paternity issues suggesting again Dharma interference with Claires pregnancy as with Lockes Mother and possibly Sun, we see Dharma trying to create a perfect bloodline maybe, possibly another reason why the childern are taken because their original fathers are of the D.I.

Mythology
The shows mythology doesn't seem to tie in with writers insitance on everthing being explainable by science or at least pseudo science, however if Hanso has discovered prescious minerals on the island, highly possible as we have non metallic mineral hint from (F)Henry earlier on, then we might conclude that while mining on the isalnd for minerals to use along with electromagnetism read

Hanso/Widmore doscovered a prescious 'stone' or balck rock whose electromagnetic anaomalies (and life sustaining healing poweres) are being studied by the DI.
The egyptian mythology must somehow connect with doomsday prophecies I think, previoisly in real life scientists have decoded hieroglyphs to locate where certain ancient lost islands might be found (like atlantis etc, if atlantis was underwater it might explain how the ship the blackrock is so inland, if the island has indeed been raised above land, explains also why hatches are built under ground, in case of the island flooding)
But the whole 'cerebus' thing - we think refers to smokey (possibly vincent)' -guarding an area where Magnus Hanso is buried or last known final resting place, and Mr. Paiks Seoul Gateway hotel, suggests to me that at some point on the island it might be possible to interact the dead again possibly tieing in with the Egypt thing of raising or contacting the dead, alas this would seem outside the scope of even pseudo science.
