Vodafone Upgrade/New Sim Handset

Greetings, I notice that there is no price difference between a Ready To Go upgrade (use your own SIM) and a new SIM handset. Does this mean you could go for the New SIM handset, use your old number and claim the credit on that. Effectively get a free sim? Or is the free credit bound to the number on the pack? Just trying…
