Also worth a look The Central, Mullingar, 45 new shops in the heart of Mullingar, with over 1,000 underground car spaces... and I live less than 0.6 miles from it!

Does anyone think that it might be too big for Athlone? Golden Island might just become what is referred to in Athlone as the 'old shopping centre'.

At least it's actually in the town centre. Golden Island on a wet and windy day, is not a fun place to be.

I'd still like to see a new bridge south of the weir and Church Street and the old bridge pedestrianised.

You should put yourself forward as the new town planner :)

I have morals, I'm no good at arse licking and I don't love myself enough. This may rule me out of local politics in Athlone.

But imagine all the income you could get from 'back scratching'. You could allow a filling station open on a round about and put a ridiculously sharp corner on a town by pass. That even appeals to me.

where is the sharp corner on the by pass...

Roscommon turnoff just after you cross the Shannon from Westmeath. Gradual bend which tightens as it goes, breaking just about every rule in good road design. Most people end up using the hard shoulder to even out the curve. Entrance from Ganley's roundabout isn't much better.

That's because most people try to take the turn to fast and oversteer to compensate and end up in the hard shoulder. Or are too lazy to concentrate and drive in the correct lane.

Does anyone have any further info on the potential tenants? I've heard the rumour that M&S might go in, and I'm guessing that if they do go in Superquinn would not (both aiming for the same market).

What about any of the other UK names (Debenhams etc)?

    Pete

Marks, Debenhams and Next are supposedly confirmed, but I'll believe it when I walk in the door.

Maybe they're not from the area and didn't notice the 180 degree tightening curve warning signs. Oh sorry, I forgot, there aren't any.

It may be that people enter too fast and end up on the hard shoulder, but you can hardly argue that it isn't a piss poor example of road design.

That bends never caused me any problems:cool: But then again, I used to drive in Milton Keynes:D
18 roundabouts between home and work, average speed over each one 50-60MPH:eek: you could always recognise an MK car, its the one with the bald offside rear tyre, and the drivers seat worn out on the side.

    this is very very true.
However a quick tyre swap half way through the tyres life will sort it out nicely :)
