At first I thought child referred to the server and he was losing touch with reality.

Our best explanation of this problem is that on occasion, particularly at peak times, our servers are getting bottlenecked and then wait-state various threads (unix threads, not boards threads) pending release of machine resources (CPU and Memory).

Hey - I encountered this issue when doing performance analysis as a job, this time last year. The problem was on Java but the system setup was just the same, and on database-related applications this is a common problem. What might easily be happening is that monitor synchronised threads are having issues while doing stuff with the database that causes them to fail to release a connection to the database. This causes the database server to hold the thread for up to the timeout time (at which point it drops and releases the database connection to the pool), and this can lock tables in the process, causing the whole lot to slow down.
A good sign of this is lower than expected load on the database server when the application servers load is above 80%. And by the sounds of what you're saying, something in the search is likely to be causing the problem.
If someone has the technical know-how to do so (I'm not familiar with MySQL) you should get a performance dump from your database server, and take a look-see at the connection pool, and the average number of threads connected - if you're constantly at or very near the top of the pool, this is likely to be the case (and expanding the pool probably won't help). Possible you've encountered a sustainability bug in vBulletin.
