Thinking of getting a Boxster as my next car - have all but discounted the 2.5 at this stage, so will be looking for a 99-01 2.7 or S.

Just wondering has anyone had both of them and how they'd compare. The S is obviously the faster car, but is it worth the extra running costs? Also, I believe the UK has fixed price servicing on them - does this also apply over here?

Was thinking about one of these myself.
What kind of price are you looking at.

Not sure to be honest - am waiting for a price back on VRT because they're not listed on the site. UK prices seem to be about £17k, which is €25K or so. VRT will be at least €12K on top of that I'd imagine. They seem to be €35k upwards or so here.

Does that not seem a lot? - I am thinking of selling my 2004 Nissan 350Z for 39 - 40k. Okay it does not have the badge but it does have a 3.5 lt engine. 35k for a 99 - 01 2.7 Boxster seems a bit toppy

No not really - seems reasonable enough to me given it was an €80k or car new. The S is a 3.2 litre by the way.

I've only driven the S and the nearest thing I could compare it with is an Audi TT 225. I found the Boxster cabin to be a much tighter and the car a more demanding drive. If you can afford the S, go for it - you will use the extra power if you have it and to hell with the extra running costs.

Cheers - still doing my groundwork, but reckon if I'm going for one it'll be the S alright. Reading of some horror stories re servicing costs though - although I know an independent Porsche / BMW guy who I'd be happy to let look after it.

First step is to sell my own car though, so amn't starting the search quite yet.

My mate has an mk1 S in the UK. He felt the base model was very short on extras for what you were paying. Be aware that the engines can go pop (his did) even with low mileage so make sure you have a good warranty on it. Personally I wouldn't buy one without an extended warranty. Nice cars though.

It'll be a 986 I'd be going for - but a 3/4 year old one has very few niggles left in it from what I've read. Will be going for a decent spec eitherway, I like my gadgets!

Have been reading of horror stories with guys in the UK alright (one guy had spent over STG£8K on whats would be deemed regular servicing in 18 months), so won't be diving in and buying the first one that comes my way

I had a Boxster for 7 years from new, never gave me any problems except for a wheel bearing and the electric motor on the window. Belgard will charge you anything from 400 Euro for a minor service and nearly 1000 for a major service. There are a couple of other places that probably are better if you are interested but I had a FPSH in Belgard.

Join the Porsche Club Ireland and you can get a discount on Bridgestone tires (approx 25%) and do track days in Mondello. I've talked to a test driver in the Porsche Factory when I was considering moving to a Boxster S but he didn't think that there was much difference between the standard and the S. All said it is a great car and pratical, it has two boots which you can easily fit a suitcase in both.

Had a 2.5 Boxter in Uk for 4 years and sold it before I came back to Ireland about a year and a half ago..It was a 97 LHD imported from the states and I never had any real problems with it. Servicing in the UK is a hell of alot more expensive in terms of Ireland..example £450 for minor service from a specialist, not main dealer ( they charge 450 upwards ) and the biggest bill I got was £1250 for major ( timing belt etc. )
To answer your question about the performance of the cars, I felt that the 204bhp out of the 2.5 was quite adequite and flighty enough for even the keenest of drivers. I have driven both the S and the 2.7 and they were not a hell of allot of difference in my opinion...2 secs to 60 is not even a blink of a difference between the 2.7 and the S...I know you will correct my stats.
I know the 2.5 is allot older now but you can pick one up for about £13k which is under 20k euro adding about 9k in vrt and u got a bargain sports car for the price of a mondeo.
Food for thought me thinks !!
    Happy hunting.

You'd have a lot better choice of cars if you'd consider the 2.5. Of course it's slower, but not hugely so. E.g. the fastest Boxster does 0-100km/h in 5.9s, the slowest in 6.9s.

Difference in tax alone is over €500 per year. Probably a good bit in insurance too. Dunno about second hand prices in ROI / UK. Dunno about VRT either as Porsches are not listed on VRT website

    VRT on a 2001 S with avg miles runs about 18K !

If our looking at a 2.7 then choose your colour wisely white ones can for as little as 30K euro with low miles the same car in black 40+

If you were going to do the whole Uk thing Id go for a E46 M3 its a more practical car. OK its a Beemer but they are very quick and the VRT is a bit less on the early models.

Theres no way that figure can be right? That assumes an OMSP of €60K??

Have a 328ci at the moment, so the M3 isn't really what I'm after - its just a faster version of what I already have. I have another 325i anyway, so the practicality isn't an issue.

Don’t ask me where they get the figures from its just what I was quoted after submitting an enquiry - Sure the VRT on a 2002 RS4 is something around 7 grand ! They still command £25+ money in the UK.

Typical of the VRT office I suppose - they'll make you pay the 18k first, then I'd have to appeal it. Too much hassle... they still haven't gotten back to me with a price yet anyway.

Bingo...(edit ...sort of bingo, this is for a 99 car with 40k on the clock)
I have received an estimate from my Head Office regarding Porsche Boxster S . The vrt will be between € 10,800 and € 10,200 depending on the condition of the vehicle when examined.
A copy of this estimate will be held on file at VRO, Tallaght for three months in the event that you decide to import this vehicle.
I am still awaiting a price for the Porsche Boxster and I will contact you as soon as I receive it.

911 and Porsche world had a nice guide to 2nd hand Boxsters - Having a look at the cayman myself - but 98 k euro is a bit pricey - although they say its better than the 911 (997)
