Would make sense, MS would be shooting themselves in the foot to slag of Sony for their high price, then try and match its functionality by an even higher one.

Still doubt I'd invest, HD video holds no real appeal for me yet, I need to get a HDTV first (oh, and a 360 wouldn't go a miss either).
I'll also wait and see what disc prices are like before I do anything... I doubt I'd consider the switch for at least another year, maybe next christmas... at that point which format to choose would probably be more obvious too

Tbh I'm not particularly interested in either format. Ask your average joe on the street about HD-DVD or Blu-Ray and they won't have a clue what you are talking about. This technology won't be main stream for a couple of years yet.

I'm wondering how much use either format will be to anybody over here. I'd guess that for games released on both formats i.e. PS3 & XBox 360, games will come on a single DVD for the 360 and a single Blu-Ray disc for the PS3. I can't see where the advantage of all this disc space comes in?

That article seems to miss the hard drive issue though.

    360(300) + 20GB Hard Drive(100) + HDDVD(a conservative 100) would make 500
PS3 including 20GB Hard Drive and Blu Ray is also 500

Of course the difference is that they're giving you choices and to the average punter the 360 seems a lot cheaper.

They haven't even said if it supports HDMI. If it doesn't it means lower res movies!

Thats if studios implement ICT, with alot of them leaving it out for the first range of titles.

Someone posted a pic of the back of the machine in one of the threads here... can't find it at the moment, but as far as I remember it had two USB ports (to daisy chain I guess), a power plug and something else, but it wasn't HDMI by the looks of it.. anyone have the pic??

Oh, and that could be a mock up that will change, of course.

The latest image of the back has network (1), optical out like the PS2 (1), AV Multi out (1), and AC in (1)

Thanks for that Monument... yeah, so they're USB ports, right? And is that an optical out or something? Either way, it isn't HDMI...

Thinking about the liklihood of such a thing, slapping a HDMI port on the HDDVD drive would be a bit of a pain, wouldn't it? You'd have two connections on your TV taken up for your 360 (one for the console, the other for the player), unless they could figure out a way of using the HDMI port on the HDDVD drive to display the games output too (not sure if that's possible, probably is).. and finally, I would have thought that the 360 would need more than an additional port to support HDMI and a higher resolution, surely they'd need to change the actual innards of the HW too?!!

i read somewhere (can't find the link now) that an MS powerpoint at E3 let slip a price of $179 or something similar for the hddvd drive, and 179 euro would kinda fit with the 130 sterling price mentioned in that article (though i'm very sceptical of eurogamer lately)

What I think is ridiculous is bringing in a new standard so soon. Most people are only getting used to the fact that dvd has killed video now and they are looking to move the goalposts again.

Seriously, how good do people want pictures to get?

Wait till you see 1080p porn and you will have no complaints ;)

Its going to continue to happen as long as people are willing to buy into it. Although I can't see what coming after HD, I can't see 1920x1080 being improved on for quiet a while.

it's all a money making exercise but as long as they are backward compatible i don't have much of a problem with the new standards tbh ,

Oh right, so the small one is the USB "in" port to connect from the 360? Makes sense, then you have one extra USB port overall.. :D

It's not like all the DVDs in the world are going to suddenly self destruct, or like people who choose to buy HD players are going to be forced to throw away their old stuff. If the technology exists to make things better, why not make it available to the consumer?
