Well I'm also refering to the quote of leaving the Corolla for dust!!

    The Kia Rio Stats:
Max. output 97.3 PS (96.0 bhp)
Max. torque 125.0 Nm (92 lbft)

I own a Toyota Corolla 1.4 VVTI and have had it on a Rolling Road:
    My readout is:

    102.7BHP
    105lbft Torque!!

That 6.7BHP More and 13lbft Torque more than yours!! And you say you left it for dust??

I also wouldn't condone "outrunning" the Gardai at 200kph, you shouldn't be on the roads!!

Iv'e had no problem getting insured on bigger cars. Had 3 2ltr cars in the year after I turned 24. Quinn have given me the best quote (€880) for the 2.5 safrane so I went with that. I'm 25 now with 3 years ncb.

3.30 in the morning we tried it but you forgot one thing with the stats weight the corolla is heavier i'm only speaking from experence with it and as i said i wont be doing it again but you should take one for a test drive just to try it

i've a kia rio ex 1.4 dohc now and its the best car i ever drove left a corolla 1.4 vvti for dust kinda out ran the cops once 200kph and got of the road asap so it shows size aint everything and they are cheaper

I assume that was downhill and they were driving a punto or something. Kia reckon the car will do 110 max.

    Hello...

A friend of mine tried to get a quote for a 2 litre civic type R recently and was told that no insurance company in ireland will insure a 21 year old driver with a full licence on anything larger than a 1.6??!

Surely this cant be correct, that a driver under 25, WITH a full licence cant drive ANY car bigger than a 1.6???

Apparently an older model 1.6 litre type r was fine, but anything bigger engine wise wasnt ok???

So by that logic, he COULD get insured on a 1.6 type R but not on a 2.0 primera or similar??

What kind of madness is this, and is it even true???

Is he mad? at 21 insurance will be more than the car is worth, with or without a full license. Quinn wont insure anyone under 25 on anything over 120bhp either. Get a normal car, wait a few years and then get a high power motor. At 24 my insurance on Celica 190 was gonna be over 5k - now at 25 I bought one and insurance is only 1,200.

Well you say the Rio is 1200kg??
    The Corolla is 1180 Kg!!
    Not much of a difference!!

And as Ste points out above, KIA reckon a topspeed of 110mph Max!!
Corolla Can reach 135mph no problem!!

You are taking the piss. Uphill from sea level in Dunkettle to watergrasshill is like going to base camp on Everest. A 1.4 would die if in anything other than third.

no the other direction they were on the on ramp at watergrasshill and i got of at glanmire

Evan at that there is no way you could outrun the garda!! They would have caught you if they were in a Zetec focus (which most their marked cars are) or a vectra!!

Both the above cars would struggle to do 140MPH which would be 225km, and your saying that a Rio with 20 odd less BHP and a lot less Torque than them outran them???

Even if you are right your 200kmph is 124MPH which the car is not capable of!! So the gardai would have caught you!! ANd at speeds or more than 100mph yes they would have followed and made sure they got you!!

OK, that is level, enough. Possibly the glanmire gardai with their 1.6 Avensis.

The 1.6 avensis still would have caught up to them!!! If you go over speeds of 100mph your lisence is suppose to be taken off you!! The above poster should not be allowed on the roads if that is what they are doing!! THat is how people end up dead!!!

just because a company says it should only do a certin speed doesn't mean the car will only do that i've seen cars and bikes exceed the speed which companies say the vehicle max out at

Even if it does exceed it max designated speed it is not done so easily!! Most likey the cars and bikes you are talking about are performance vehicles, which means they can be modified to get more power!! A 1.4 engine can't be!! Even at that you have to go and prove apoint by racing around the roads to prove a company wrong about their cars top speed??

no not to prove a point it was a once off thing i wont be trying it again i've only got higher than the recomended speed once while i was driving before and it was under escort from the gardai

Hmmmm.... under escort from the gardai?? Yet you claimed that you Outran them??? SO that would mean 2 counts of going over the 110MPH mark, and aswell as that why would the gardai allow you speed??

Maybe they were hoping he would crash so we would have one less cretin on the roads?

They have to quote you either way but a lot of companys are not insuring vtecs anymore!!

Is it only my opinion that somebody on a provisional and so young is able to get insurance on a Type R i reckon its madness, my problem is not so much with the age just the provisional license

Well mate, I do agree that it is madness but your car is your prefernece at the end of the day!! I drive a Type R alot of the time and not once over the speed limit so I don't see a problem with it, I am a safe driver!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

I think the point is that a provisional driver should not be allowed to drive such a powerful car.

Yeah if you are using all the power then they shouldn't but at the end of the day, a car is a car as long as you keep it to the speed limit and know the car fairly well!!

I think though it probably has been demonstrated that your average learner can do less damage in a 1.0 Micra than a Type R. Insc cos work on averages and stats.

Well I have had my lessons and have been driving a number of years because of delays on the test list and what not! I am safer than alof of drivers out there with Full licenses!!

It is impossible to say that you are a safer driver than somebody else without a direction comparision. The point as agreed by others is that giving a Type R to a learner driver is madness but as you say it is not your fault the government should think about this.

You must mean 135 kph for the corolla. Theres no way it would do that. Compare it to a 106 GTi 1.6l 120 HP 950KG and you'll just get 130 out of that

My insurance on a 1.6 car is the same as a 1.4 but anything over a 1.6 i cant get a quote, its a joke being tared with the same image as scumbags who drive up the price of insurance with there recklessness.

There's a lot of incorrect material in this thread.

I bought a new 2003 Golf GTI at 21 and insured it for €3,000 as a named driver so it's possible to get insured under 25.

Last Sept I insured a 2005 Golf GTI at 23 and it cost me €1,900 in my own name, I'm still not 25.

Granted, I have over 5 years NCB but just throwing my details very quickly into Hibernian's website which isn't even that specific, my next renewal would be €1,300 fully comp.

Quinn are by NO means the cheapest around.

AXA are wa*kers. I too got the "you have to be 30 until we will insure you on the car you own". Bollocks.

You shouldn't have to bow to insurance companies just because you are into your cars and comments like "get a normal car" pi55 me off no end. It's your money and you should be allowed drive what you like once you have the money to buy it.
